Show HORSE VS BICYCLE New Board Tracks Likely to Produce a Mile In 205 No act of any national racing board of the League of American Wheelmen has been more important says the Chicago Tribune than the one recognizing records made on board tracks recently adopted at the New York meeting At this early time of the season it is almost impossible to guess what a mile could be made In if circumstances were favorable Just at present there is considerable difference between the bicycle record and the pacing and trotting record the former being 215 and the latter 206 and 20SU respectively These horse records however were made from flying starts while the bicycle records were from a standing start the difference being all of two seconds x When Windle made the 215 record he did so on as good a dirt track as a bicycle ever rode over but even that was not perfect and was on tho recordbreaking day quite dusty If he made this ride on a thirdmile board track perfectly smooth and banked seven or eight feet at tho turns there is hardly a doubt that ho would have made close to 210 providing pacemuking was good A fine and smooth board track is easily 100 yards faster in a mile than on one of clay brick dust or anything any-thing else This would mean ton seconds to the yard at a pace slower even than a throeminute gait though of course it would be a pretty rapid gain To make 205 to the mile is not an Impossibility according ac-cording to W C Thome if all circumstances circum-stances are very favorable I |
