which were played with artistic touch I I The debate on the question Should v Women Have the Right of SnfmgeI I X wivh Dr Ellen B Ferguson in the affirmative r firmative and DI Ellen Cuts Gage in I the negative was listened to with a great cal of interest I Dr Ferguson was introduced by Grant H Smith and in opening in favor fa-vor of suffrage said that when Mrs I e Abigail Adams wrote to her husband asking for a recognition of the rights of women in recogiton grat declaration of independance she struck the keynote i key-note which hal resulted in the nfrani hisement of women In many states in the Union In the first place God created woman by taking her from man side to be his equal nut from Ms head to be his superior nor from his feet to his inferior The only authority in holy writ for the au thoiu of man is in Pauls injunction tha vomen shall obey but this does not i nme from God In ages gone by looked down wjnion have always been had brute upon because they had not forcr tuillcient to hold their own Now when brains count they are found crowding to the front and displacing men in the highest positions lio course of government in England ilunug the re S of the queens and the conduit of these women while in pou r tvae reviewed and the infer i no drawn therefrom that the members mem-bers of the fair sex are able to rule jironiih The principles laid down as the tus for the Revolutionary war Tht > a government derives Us authority authori-ty Ii 11n i the consent of the governed and < lat taxation without representn ijoi1 i j unjust apply to this matter Tn patriots condemned an aristocracy of Mfidd In England but established n ibis rounlrv an aristocracy of sex r > hf < i iistitutlon places women in the aifl1dfly with the Idiots lunatics imiinals minors But really they are I pia id a grade lower for all these latter lat-ter may recover from their disabilities ties while women can never be relieved lieved In the eastern mosques they say that neither dogs pigs women or other unclean animals shall enter America has risen but one step higher The rght of suffrage should lie given to womar because she is an individual because she has a right equally with man to map out her own life She now has ni power to right her wrongs and her field is thus limited Woman is a citizen as much as man under the constitution con-stitution and yet she has no power in the affairs of governmcrt Woman claims her right to the ballot on the same ground asman claims his Even gound x < n this land where man considers himself him-self the very personification of gallantry gal-lantry woman needs protection for oppressive op-pressive laws still stand on the statute books Man claims the right to be tried by his peers and woman is just fed in claiming the same The ballot Is claimed in the Interest of good government gov-ernment The government is the home on u larger scale and if woman can govern in the home she should have a shanee to prove herself in this broader pphcro There is no virtue in the argument argu-ment that woman would lower herself I by mixing in politics There would be no lowering of woman but a purification 11 purifica-tion of politics Man cannot represent woman anywhere He can do so no i more on earth than he can at the bar I of eternal justice I ¼ Dr Gage said in reply that the evils I of indiscriminate suffrage are seen every election these would be accentuated accentu-ated by equal suffrage When one considers con-siders the powers that would be given to the women of the lower classes and casss the numbers in the upppr classes who would not use the ballots i seems as though a great mistake would be made if the ballot were given Womp are not fitted for the ballot What all women 1 wo-men want thE will gH They do not 5 want the ballot or they would have 0 hail it bffore this I would have taken but a little time to send out a number of sons who would hap made Themselves felt in behalf of their mothers Suffrage should be limit lim-it 1 I not extertded Women should have < qual rights with men These winon will e by making themselves inringrnt TIe workingwoman today tab an inferior station an inCeror stton because of in competency for there are few women who are lilted for business life and fewer who would not pay more attention atten-tion to anything rather tK < n < their business There is no doubt that there is a great deal of discontent among war but this Is due t a great extent ex-tent to foolishness in contracting marriage mar-riage These life partnerships are entered en-tered into on grounds of sentiment on grounds that enter into no other transaction trans-action in life No man would think of taking a business partner without a knowledge of his quaJfications but he will take a wife without knowing much about her Women thus marry marr ing and some of them getting cussed men fit only to be taken out cusse hanged feel a great discontent But the ballot will not remedy the te evils about which they Complain They do not want to mix In politics they do not want jury service Imagine a k woman cooped up on a jury with borne l mischievous children a sickly husband and a wild Irish cook In the kitchen Women already have all the power they need They have only to demand de-mand in concert and they will get what they want 1 the unmarried taxpaying tax-paying women or a majority of them want the franchise they should have K She believed in every sort of woman wo-man having everything she wants The majority of women are in the houses of the country and will always remain so In considering this question ques-tion we must consider what will be of the greatest good to the greatest number num-ber Women new occupy a high place Put them Into politics and it will belike be-like using the best china for every day h purposes The most valuable articles 4 cannot always serve best when put io tt a base use When the Spaniards en I tered Peru thy had no iron And were compelled to shoe their horses with silver sil-ver Their shoes were not satisfactory and there was a great waste of valuable wa geat ble minerals If women are given the I ballot it wH be like putting silver i shoes on the horses They had batter I bear the evils they have at present t hr than nt upon themselves others they know nothing about They should work for the moral enfranchisement of woman They should show her superiority I superi-ority to man Let the rights work themselves out The women are to raise a race and should not let the distractions of politics mitigate against the health or intellect of that race Dr Ferguson closed the debate with I a ergson the positions taken Vty t her and assertion that opponent an aserton I j politics will not degrade women as they do not need to give attention to I them 365 days in every year and that those women who want the franchise I should have it |
