Show I nE GREAT BAIT liE 15 OVER Returns Coming in Slowly From the Outside Precincts f T IS SOMEWHAT DOUBTFUL iI I i BUT THE INDICATIONS POIAT TO Jp CAXXOVS ELECTION It lf Possible Tlmt the ReptifoHenns Will Control the Constitutional Convention Koili Parties Made a Hard FIght In This City Mnny Important Precincts Yet to Hear From I The election is over the die is cast The battle was a hot one the contest was intense almost fierce The returns at the hour of going to press are far from complete but the figures which Orate been received indicates that Frank J Cannon is elected delegate to 1 1 Congress by a majority of from 500 to 1000 Early returns from Weber county country precincts indicated that Rawlins Raw-lins would carry the county but the unprecedented majority which Cannon gained in Ogden city upset all previous calculations and gave him the county The Democrats will doubtless elect their delegates to the constitutional convention in Box Elder Cache Davis Emery Juab Morgan and Rich coun jfVss in the Third and Fourth precincts of this city except one Republican San Juan Sanpete Uintah Utah Wasatch Washington and Wayne counties The complexion of the convention con-vention is therefore in doubt with the probability that the Republicans will have a majority The possibility is that the Democrats have not elected a man on the Salt Lake county ticket I The returns up to 4 oclock this morning morn-ing were as given below First Precinct In the First p inct voting commenced com-menced early in thh morning and continued con-tinued quite regularly throughout the day The four polling places within the Exposition building afforded ample facilities for handling a much larger vote than was polled and that without any crowding or jamming Out of a v possible 2126 votes there were cast X167 At 1130 a m there were 750 j tes in and all through the dinner hour there was a constant stream of voters lining up before the windows If there were any who anticipated i times livelier than the ordinary in the J First precinct they were disappointed t S for throughout the entire day about the polls and vicinity there was not the slightest disturbance of any kind In fact there was not even an angry word spoken something remarkable in itself everything considered Democrats Demo-crats Republicans and Populists all mingled and jostled together in the endeavor en-deavor to corral votes for their respective re-spective parties and while valiant work was done all around it was a noticeable fact that the Republicans had more workers out and also more t i carriages in service in which to go i fnrth with skirmishers in pursuit of laggards It was a day of scratching tickets and they were scratched The Republican Repub-lican workers were known to pursue Democrats and strive in every instance to st them to allow a Republican pastor to go They worked hard on such lines as these all day and in some instances unwary voters allowed these fellows to wheedle them into voting vot-ing for one of the Republican delegation delega-tion to the constitutional convention This method was followed out systematically system-atically all day showing how anxious were the Republicans to cut out the constitution in their own favor Within the south wing of the buildIng build-Ing was the refreshments in the way of steaming hot coffee and sandwiches and workers and voters of all shades were observed to patronize the same at regular intervals Officers McGinty and Parry were on dock all day and there was absolutely 310 excitement for them at all Both the Democrats and Republicans had tents upon the grounds while the latter I lat-ter had a telephone in theirs in order to more quickly reach the head pushers t push-ers scattered throughout the city and Intent on working every possible string At 4 oclock Our Joe was driven up to the polls bp Dan Griffin and on his approach mighty shout went up from the hundreds about Denhalters and Helds bands together to-gether with the Juvenile Drum corps came around several times during they the-y and discoursed sweet music to the crowds The small boy was there too he was there in goodly numbers and did his share of shouting and cheering JJoili when occasion offered and when didnt Everybody agreed that for such a red hot election and one of such signal importance it was the quietest ever held in this or any other city It was phenomenally quietyet throughout through-out the whole day and beneath u smiling smil-ing demeanor was plainly discernable a set determination on both sides to win the contest if votes and vigilance would do it It was noticed that names were scratched scratch-ed on all the tickets save that of Our Toehis name was not once scratched and shows in what estimation he is held by the people Second Precinct t The fight in the Second was one of the H prettiest of the day From the time rV that Bartholomew Halliman cast the 7 first vote at poll 3 at 8 and 7 seconds to the moment William Burtons ballot etas accepted at poll 1 the warfare o 0 a 0 U never ceased Democrats Populists and Republicans vied with each other in trying to gain the mastery John Stubbs of the Peoples party hustled from early morn until dewey eve struggling to elect himself constitutional consti-tutional delegate while W A Graves candidate for the same position assiduously as-siduously toiled to prevent Stubbs discounting I dis-counting his vote The fight between the Republicans and Democrats centered on Delegate to Congress and sheriff The heads of the tickets were not generally scratched The Amorines worked like Trojans for Hardy and traded everything in sight N B Corser Charley Goodsell D W Gamble H D Newton McCagne Van Horne Westerfield and all the others represented the Republicans Ed Grennan Joe and Walt Lewis Ed Norton James Kennelly and many other Democrats did yeoman service in the cause Democracy The day passed without a single incident in-cident to mar the peace and quiet I The voting began at 8 prompt and at 9 oclock 227 votes had been cast of which 58 were at poll 3 both for territorial terri-torial and county and for the constitutional consti-tutional convention At 11 oclock the total was 559 12 noon showed a total of 821 while at 3 p m the vote was 1491 at 4 oclock 1972 voters had exercised I their rights When the polls closed i 2251 votes had been cast of a total of 2805 registered The Republicans immediately im-mediately issued a bulletin claiming the precinct by 2805 majority In the morning the Republicans sprang a roorback in the shape of a notice to Republicans to look out for bogus ballots This put the Democrats on their guard and a ticket headed Democratic was found with the name of Harvey Hardy for sheriff upon it The Republicans subsided at once Third Precinct I The returns from the Third precinct pre-cinct were not nearly completed when The Herald went to press the figures on the delegates to Congress alone being be-ing obtainable Rawlins had 706 votes 1 and Cannon 677 Majority for Rawlins 1 is 29 Although there Were a few challenges i none were sustained Many of those whose names appeared upon the challenging chal-lenging lists failed to appear and claim the right of franchise When ex Governor Thomas walked up to the window and presented his ballots the little gentleman evidently anticipated a demonstration but none came As a matter of fact < the only cheering took place when the Democratic candidates and Governor West made their appearance appear-ance While it was a battle royala grand struggle for supremacythe work was done very quietly So industriously did the workers apply themselves that hardly a voter who could be reached managed to make his escape The number num-ber of nonvoters was a matter of great surprise however 264 registered people having failed to present themselves at the ballot window As was the case in every other pre and cinct scratching was very liberal several of the candidates received severe se-vere punishment Fourth Precinct Promptly at 8 oclock the polls at the Fourth precinct were thrown open and the voters began to file in A census of the judges taken before the arrival of the opening hour revealed the fact that George D Pyper one of the Democrats Dem-ocrats assigned to poll 3 was not present pres-ent being confined to his home by a severe illness Edgar Howe was chosen cho-sen to fill the vacancy Each party was represented by challengers chal-lengers checkers and ticket peddlers galore and all did energetic work It was developed that the Republicans had determined to secure the precinct at all hazards and were spending considerable con-siderable money for the purpose of r corrupting those voters who could be influenced by the lucre Long before the polls opened a great number of young men who appeared upon the lists as Democrats or doubtful made their appearance wearing gorgeous Republican badges and commenced to industriously push the tickets of that I party And then the shameful part of I the business showed from under Each of the badgewearers had been retained 1 I by the g o p at 250 for the day I They were Republicans for revenue 1 I 1 I only and of these young men who thought more of the dollars than of 1 the principles to which they have always I j al-ways clung there were 23 I Voting began early and while the voters did not make any special rush there was a steady and increasing presentation pre-sentation of ballots At 9 oclock one i hour after the opening of the polls 190 votes had been cast 50 at poll No 1 73 at poll No2 and 67 at poll No3 I Things moved along very orderly all day and there were no scrimmages to mar the harmony Democratic bands were plentiful and cheers for Rawlins woke the echoes far and near An excellent ex-cellent lunch prepared by Mrs F S Richards Mrs Dewey Richards Mrs Webber and others was served to all comers Despite the Illness of George D Py per that gentleman felt he could not stay at home and miss his voting priv ilege and at about 330 oclock he went to the polls and cast his ballot Throughout the day according to the checkers the Democrats held their majority by onehalf of all votes cast and at 525 oclock the time of closing the polls the following result as given out by the Democratic checkers Sbtainedhe was obtained I Out of 1320 registered voters 1156 votes were cast of which 578 were Democratic 450 Republican and 128 Populist j Fifth Precinct The voting in the Fifth precinct was conducted at four polls in the Richelieu building corner of Third West and Second South streets The judges were as follows I No 1T A Williams D Martin I Lindsay D Fred W Dennis R No 21 M B Sowles D John R Winder I Jr D George L Nye R No 3John G Midgiey D C A Banks D F B Platt R No William Hamilton Smith D George R Cushing D D E Moore R In the early morning hours the polling poll-ing was light from 11 till 1 oclock the voters came in more rapidly and by 2 oclock 940 votes were cast out of a total registration of 1808 Of these the Republicans claimed a majority of 250 A number of challenges were made I on the grounds of nonresidence or change of residence but in most cases these were overruled and the parties allowed to cast their votes The general regulations were excellent and the polling poll-ing went along smoothly and the utmost ut-most good humor prevailed I Scouts of all the three parties were out ahead and supplied the voters with tickets Both Democrats and Republicans Republi-cans used carriages freely to bring their adherents to the polls Populists up to 1 oclock It was claimed had polled about 70 votes I There was a good deal of scratching on all the tickets The Amorines scratched Goodwin and the antiAmor I ines used some plasters in favor of Lewis At 3 oclock the vote as claimed stood Democrats 460 Republicans 690 Populists 200 Total 1350 From that time on the voters came in straggling strag-gling and when the polls closed at 525 oclock the total number of votes cast was 1464 344 short of the total registration Estimates of the votes I among the several parties was 580 Democratic 784 Republican 200 Populist I Popu-list The Populist vote however is considered to be greatly overestimated There was a great deal of scratching and it is generally conceded that Raw i lins ran ahead of his ticket CONGRESS COLLECTOR RECORDER ASSESSOR
