Show RICHES FOUND IN i I I A HOLLOW TEEE VILD EXCITEMENT OCCASIONED IX INDIANA I Hen Box of Treasure n Few Hn man Bones Some Decayed Clothing Cloth-ing nntl Legends 3Iake Ui the Story Bourbon Ind April 7This section is wildly excited over the discovery of a hidden treasure and the skeleton of a supposed miner The find was made by Will OBrien a young man of this city OBrien while hunting in the woods chased a squirrel into a hollow log He began kicking the decaying log to pieces when his foot struck a large copper box securely fastened I was s heavy he could scarcely lift i He pried open the box und to his delight de-light found it filled with shining gold and silver coins The exact amount is not known but it is a large sum The coins are all of American mintage and bear dates between the years 1820 and 1836 OBrien took his treasure home with the aid of a friend and told of the rich discovery A party went to the place and today the log was taken to pieces Near one end the skeleton of a man was discovered covered With the bones were pieces of cloth in a bad state of preservation Elderly people in this vicinity remember remem-ber a miserly old man who lived not far from where the box of treasure vas discovered and who mysteriously disappeared twentyfive years ago The bones found are believed to be his and the only plausible theory of how his remains came to be in such a queer place is that being pursued by robbers he took refuge in a hollow tree and was unable to extricate himself The theory is also advanced by some that the old man may have taken his money into the woods to bury i and entered a hollow hol-low tree to escape a wild animal Whichever explanation may be cor rect the discovery has created great excitement and the oldtimers are reviving re-viving and rehearsing tales of buried measure and earlyday adventures I is believed that other treasures were hidden in this locality by early setters set-ters who were forced t use this means for guarding their wealth on account of the liability of an attack by Indians Several searching parties ore being made up and during the spring months many holes will be dug in the woods near here |
