Show Gladstone on Home Rule I LONDON Dec 11 Gladstone arrived today to-day at Betford At tho depot ho addressed a meeting of 2000 persons He said the continuance of Parcell in the leadership would be fatal to home rule in Ireland Scotland and Wales Parnell was no longer tho leader of the Irish Nationalists who had separated themselues from him He Gladstone admitted the Irish party ought to be independent that the consideration and settlement of this question ought to be left to them but there was somothiBg beyond be-yond all considerations in Irish politics namoly the great cause of Liberalism in England Ireland and Scotland The tiouole respecting the Irish leadership leader-ship was an additional reason for granting home rule Why should English and Scotch and Welsh politics depend upon the choice of the Irish leader The confidential communications between the Liberal and Home Rule parties and the conversation with Parnell at Hawarden in November 1889 he said wore equally satisfactory to both parties from the fact that it was provided pro-vided by himself because he had no reason publicly to speak about it but by the other party He believed the OShea divorce proceedings would entirely destroy the moral force needed in Ireland for any one who would be the leading champion of the national cause The Liberals felt I that in granting home rule they constituted the Irish the constitutional I constitu-tional ruler of Irelaud The Liberals were unwilling after what had appeared ap-peared in the divorce court relative to the private and public conduct of Parnell to make him the constitutional governor of Ireland It was absolutely untrue that Morley had suggested that Parnell hold office under tho British crown before homo rule was conceded The Liberal partys I work in parliament was to resist coercion I in Ireland and that work was as urgent i now as it had ever been no matter who I might be leader of the Irish cause Gladstone I Glad-stone subsequently addressed an audience of 5000 persons at Worksop Ho said the I determination of the Liberals was irrevocable irrevoc-able they could not undertake effectually Ito I-to support the cause of home rule at tho next election in connection with one particular par-ticular name Ho pointed out the importance impor-tance of continuing the struggle for Ireland Ire-land declaring legislation for England could not be obtained until tho country had got rid of the home rule question |
