Show IN MMORY OF PLUMB Former Kansans Pass Resolutions of Sympathy Among the Virtues He Possessed They Recite His Firm Adherence and Strong Advocacy of Sllvur That the good done by statesmen and men in high office lives after them was demonstrated yesterday afternoon when former residents of Kansas now residing in Salt Lake gathered at the office of Secretary Elijah Sells and passed a series of resolutions setting forth tho purity of character great worth as a representative of the people in the halls of Congress and the devotion and patriotism to his country of the late Senator Preston 1 Plumb of Kansas His sudden death was received in i this city with profound sorrow not by former residents of the Sunflower state alone but by all classes of people and members of all political parties Sen aa ator Plumb was a staunch Republican but ho had the manhood to rise sometimes when partisan bigotry ran too high above the level and tenets of the crossroad politician tician as witness his record on the tariff question Colonel Sells was elected chairman of the meeting and F J Addieman secretary A committee of nine on resolutions was appointed ap-pointed und tho following were presented and adopted by the meeting Whereas We former citizens ot Kansas resident In Salt Lake city have learned with keen sorrow and regret the eternise of that eminent emi-nent citizen patriot and statesman Hon Pros ton B Plumb and have met in public assemblage assem-blage express sentiments in accordance with our feelings In the stormy period of the early years of Kansas ho was steadfast and true to freedoms cause In the war for tho preservation preserva-tion of the union he was prominent among the volunteers who nicked their lives for their countrys preservation When the War cloud had passed away he actively resumed his du tiCS as a citizen soou coming into prominence in the affairs of his adopted sate and in a comparatively com-paratively brief period of time taking a place in the councils ot tho nation in walch he early earned distinction that made him a peer among the ablest of his associates therein Hebolved 1 hat his purity of cnaractcr untir ing industry and patriotic devoton d servos to bo emulated by his fellow citizens and It fur nlsnes a precept to the youth of our nation that may be profitably studed and followed Kesolved That in his death the loss to the state of Kansas to the United States and to the nation is irreparable Resolved That we of the west and frontier feel that to us under Divine edict thero has been dealt a severe blow in that we realized In the lamented statesman a most able earnest ned efficient advocate an inalienable friend ever and unceasingly espousing that which looked to the protection and prosperity whih is every material interest No one ever fought more heroically or Intelligently for the restoration tion of sliver to its riphtiul place and the wel fare of the men who toll In the rugged vaults I from whence it comes and for the settlemen settement and development public lands Resolved That our heartfelt sympathies go to those fcorely stricken one his bereaved wife I and children To the memorial were signed the names of the following pioneers from the Sun flower state Elijah Sells Lawrence F G Addleman Emporia F J Leonard Lawrence J M Stutsman Belleville E Can field Seneca J H Willians Seneca W C Higgins Syracuse J S Morse Topeka To-peka W E Halm Topeka C C Cline Minneapolis Henry Ames Sheridan county C S Kinney Leavenworth W L Brown Garden City C W Borris Garden City The resolutions will be signed by many more Kansans who were unable to be present pres-ent at the meeting and forwarded to the wife of the deceased Senator |
