Show SILVER MEN ELATED The Result of the Democratic Caucus Pleases Them HARTER IS NOT DISCOURAGED Ho Says the Passage of the Bland Bill WI Disrupt the Party as Much a Slavery Did in 1860 WASHINGTON Feb 27The free coteago men of tho House feel elated over tho action of last nights caucus in refusing to consider any proposition for the delay of free coinage legislation Harter and his friends content themselves today by simply sim-ply announcing they will oppose the Bland bill by every parliamentary tactic In their power when it cornea up in the House and that it will never pass the lower branch of II Congress as the generosity of the Democratic Demo-cratic committee on rules has placed at their disposal tho parliamentary weapons of obstruction necessary to tire out and weary the friends of the measure meas-ure by weeks of delay Tho I free coinage people openly deride I these pretensions and say the Democrats I Dem-ocrats who opposo tho free coinage bill for the most party will merely content I themselves by recording their votes against the bill Stand Pierce and other leaders of free coinage are today compiling com-piling and arranging petitions to be presented pre-sented tomorrow to the committee on rules asking for a day for the consideration consider-ation of the free coinage bill These petitions contain the signatures of all friends of free coinage Representative Pierce today said There is no doubt the rules committee will report an oruer at an early day and the date will also bo set when a final vote can be taken So far as tho free coinage men are concerned ho said they did not wont more than three or four days debate cer tainly not for moro than a week Bland will insist however that final action betaken be-taken when the bill comes up We will pass it through the House said Pierce send it to the benate and the responsibility will rest with that body The bill has he said a clear majority of forty votes in the House so there is not the slightest doubt of its passage with ten Republicans Re-publicans favorable to free coinage They will have about 210 votes for the bill The remainder of the Republicans and thirtyfive or forty Democrats will vote against the bill Harter of Ohio denies ho is discouraged by last nights caucus which ho said showed that the strength of the craze is not so great as it was supposed and that reason is reasserting itself If all classes of citizens throughout the country reach their members of Congress bere with protests against such measures the ultimata defeat of the outrageous demands of the silver people will bo assured as-sured The passage of the Bland bill will disrupt the Democratic party as completely com-pletely as did tho slavery question in 1860 |
