| Show Knishta of Pythias Conclave MILWAUKEE July 8 The features of the morning Pythian conclave circles gave a grand reception at the exposition building and the opening of the deliberations of the supreme lodge The axercises at the exposition expo-sition building were opened by the mayor who made a speech of welcome The governor gov-ernor followed with a welcome on behalf of the people of Wisconsin Following the reception the members of the supreme lodge were escorted to the West Side Turner Tur-ner hall which was reserved for their use during the supreme lodge session and the first meeting of that body was opened It is approximated that 15000 men responded re-sponded to reveille at Camp Carnahan this morning but for aright that is positively known at General Carnahans headquarters headquar-ters there might have been a million men under tents last night There is a deplorable deplor-able lack of system about the management manage-ment of the camp and responsibility does not seem to rest on the shoulders of any particular person Up to noon only two brigades bad submitted to AdjutantGen eral McKee a report of the number of men under their jurisdiction Several cases of prostration from heat occurred yesterday and today but none serious The Red Cross society has established a hospital ground and are caring for some cases of sickness The parade of the Knights of Pythias in spite of the almost unbearable heat was a great success Ten thousand men were inline in-line The Fifth brigade was composed of 150 Californians Knights from the other western states were under the command of General George H ScafTner Commander Carnahan strenuously denounced the story to the effect that he had refused the California Cali-fornia delegation admission to quarters because be-cause they wanted to bring wine and liquors into the camp It is a vicious lie and seems to be printed with malicious intent in-tent the general said There is no California Cal-ifornia division here and I have not yet met a single man from that state No application ap-plication for quarters was made and quite naturally they could not be reluced |
