Show THE SESSION OVER The Territorial Teachers Convention Con-vention Adjourns CONCLUDING ADDRESSES MADE It Is Resolved to Publish Full Proceedings Petition the Legislature to Appoint a Central School Board Etc Yesterday was the closing day of tho Utah Teachers association meetings The morning session opened at 10 oclock at tha Deseret university Second Vice President Stewart presided Prof Henry Montgomery read a paper entitled Elementary Ele-mentary Science in the Public Schools which was of great interest and evoked lengthy and spirited discussion Supervisor Augsburg gave a very able lecture on Training in Relation to Other School Work The disousiion which followed was very interesting and showed that the teachers who took part in it were thoroughly conversant con-versant with the subject A musical performance by Prof H E Giles of Provo brought the morning session ses-sion to a close THE AFTERNOON SESSION The association reassembled at 2 oclock and the hall was well tilled VicePresident Millspaugh occupied the chair The first on the programme was a paper bySuper intendent J S Peery who took for his theme Utahs preparation for the educational educa-tional exhibit of 1S93 Mr Peerys paper was one of the best of the whole session and was of great interest to all whether directly interested in the cause of education educa-tion or not It is very desirable that this territory should make a good showing in the educational department of the Worlds fair In the discussion which followed a committee com-mittee of three Messrs Woratell Schene and Foote was appointed to nominate a committee of nine to take charge of tbe territorial ter-ritorial educational exhibit at the Worlds fair Later in the session the committee of three reported that it had appointed the following to act in that capacity Dr Mi la paugh chairman Messrs Peory Foote San born Montgomery Mooch Hayes Short and Miss Zach Next followed a capital CALESTDENIC PERFORMANCE by the school children to the number of about thirty from Provo under tho direction direc-tion of Mr J B Walton Professor Giles played the piano and the boys and girls went through the varied exorcises ex-orcises with great precision ahd accuracy They were heartily applauded and fully deserved it as it was a very pretty performance per-formance Next in order was the opening of the QUESTION BOX in which were found a dozen questions in terestiup to those engaged in school work and which were answered by various members mem-bers present A musical performance by the Provo children formed a very pleasing interlude Prof Giles accompanied on the organ and creditably the little ones acquitted themselves very A short paper on the subject of SCHOOL LIBRARIES was read by Principal D T Miller of Richfield The next business was the hearing of the REPORTS OF DIFFERENT COMMITTEES The committee on constitution handed in its report but as further time was considered con-sidered necessary to reconsider some important im-portant points the committee was instructed in-structed to hold over and report more fully at a later date Report of committee on appropriations was received and reserved for future consideration con-sideration The committee on reading circles cir-cles reported and it was resolved to establish estab-lish under the control of the board of directors di-rectors reading circles on the same principles prin-ciples as those which exist in Missouri Iowa and other states Mr Avey was appointed ap-pointed secretary of the reading circle The question of printing the proceedings of the present session of the association in pamphlet form was discussed at length and it was resolved to recommend to the directors direc-tors to appropriate the sum of Si5 for the purpose of printing 400 copies of the proceedings pro-ceedings to include a verbatim report of all the papers read during the session a copy of the pamphlet to be sent to each member of the association MISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS was then in order The Worlds fair com millee was empowered to elect a manager to cooperate with the territorial Worlds fair commissioner Tao president was empowered em-powered to appoint a committee of five to revise school bylaws and make a uniform course of study for all the schools in the territory I was also resolved that the Legislature be petitioned to appoint a central cen-tral school board to control the affairs of education in the territory A vote of thanks was passed to the children who had come from Provo to sing and to give their calisthenic performance also to the faculty of the Deseret University for the use of the rooms in which the association orthe has held its meetings The singing of America by the members closed the proceedings pro-ceedings of the second session of the association as-sociation |
