Show IN RAILWAY CIRCLES The First Street Fight Tho BroadGuasing Personal and General There is a very fair prospect that the question of the right of the city council to grant franchises to both electric railway rail-way companies on First street will be tested in the courts and that at an early day too It will be remembered that the Rapid Transit company commenced to build there but suspended operations at the request of the citizens along the route until tie city council could ue appealed to in the matter The council was appealed to but nothing come of it and the other morning before sunup the street car Company Com-pany had a large force of men on and down went the track while protests ascended as-cended at a rapid rate As a result ot this the First street people have arisen in their wrath and have said that no street cars shall run up that thoroughfare until the courts have decided that they have perfect per-fect right to do so The land now occupied as a street was not in the original plat but was deeded to the city for street purposes lotS the convenience of the people who at one time owned it The con irlf > riitinn w > is SI and sit tho iirfisent vnln ation of land in that vicinity is probably worth 200 JX In case all other remedies fail it is quite possible that the legality of the transfer to the city will bo brought into the courts and there is every indication now that it will be some months if not years before the buzz of an electriccar is I heard along First street While many icsidents of First street do not object ob-ject j to onet rack they do most decidedly object to two and there are others wuo express themselves to the effect that one line l is just one too many These latter will make an effort to prevent both companies com-panies from using the street |
