Show t IRALWAYCRCLE 1I 1 I I I Very Friendly Meeting Between Railway and Business Men PHESEKTKATES ULLY DISCUSSED The Question Referred to the Local AgentS to be Settled From Time to Time S r SOther Railway Notes As announced in the report of tho transportation trans-portation bureau of tho chamber of commerce com-merce the position taken by Salt Lake city is that on account of the volume of traffic f and the natural advantages of its location the merchants of this city are entitled to the same basis of rates as adopted in the transcontinental traffic and applied to the terminal points For example when tho rate from the Missouri river to San Francisco Fran-cisco and Portland is 99 cents per hundredweight hundred-weight that tho same rate should apply t Salt Lake city instead of tho greater rate J which is now and always has been applied to intermediate poi t s there would be a general reduction from 2 to 99 coats on 1 certain class and a proIA tional reduction upon all other classes A conference as indicated heretofore was held yesterday afternoon at the chamber cham-ber of commerce between the members of the transportation bureau and the representatives repre-sentatives of the railway lines centering in this city There were present Messrs Fred Simon G F Culmer T G Webber V H Remington Henry Cohn A L Williams Wil-liams Commissioner W C B Allen H C Lett and H P Mason of the transportation transporta-tion bureau and Messrs J A Munroe traffic manager of the Union Pacinc railway rail-way S AV Eccles general freight and passenger agent of the Union Pacific J H Bennett general freight and passenger agent of tho Rio Grando Western and A l iSf Rio Oliver Grande general agent of the Denvji In addition t the basis of rates desired as mentioned above the bureau insisted that passenger rates to Utah should not be greater than to Montana common points as they believed that this was a direct discrimination dis-crimination affecting the settlement and growth of the territory A third proposition discussed by the committee in its meeting and generally adopted by the merchants and manufac tuiers of this city was that a distributing S rate was essential to the expansion of the wholesale trade to surrounding territories Another proposition included within the Jast named was the existing status or affairs which established so many common points in Utah on the same basis of rates as Salt Lake city A number of questions arising in this local territory required the joint action of the Rio Grande Western and the Union Pacific companies to change or adjust so as to meet the views of a great many shippers and competing interests As is known the chamber of commerce has already protested against any advance in freight and passenger rates to this city The conference with the railway officials was for the purpose of present ing the situation in its various bear jugs to state the wishes of the community and to try to arrange for the cooperation of the railway companies com-panies in the settlement and the development 7 develop-ment of Utah territory and for such adjustment ad-justment of tariff as would encourage and assist our people in finding a market for manufactured articles and tho immense mineral and other deposits as well as establish es-tablish the wholesale and jobbing interests of Salt Lake city The committee was met in a friendly spirit and in the two hours interesting discussion a great mass of details was elicited on both sides of the question in regard re-gard to local and through freight and passenger pas-senger rates One important fact presented 2 pre-sented and urged upon the railway companies com-panies was the necessity for cheap fuel for manufacturing purposes in order to buildup build-up a great industrial city and utilize the vast variety of valuable deposits found in Utah As 8 result ot the conference the matter was referred to the local freight agents Messrs Eccles and Bennett to be taken up by the bureau and settled from time to time as an agreement can be arrived at From the friendly expressions ex-pressions of Air Munroe on Salt Lake and Utah territory it was inferred by the committee com-mittee that much good will result from the efforts of our citizens It is hoped that Messrs Bennett and Eccles who are identified iden-tified with the interests and prosperity of Salt Lake will unite with the community in securing all the benefits that can be consistently con-sistently granted by therailway companies It is certain that the rapid growth aud importance S im-portance of Salt Lake city is attracting the attention of railways and capitalists allover over the United States and that new lines I of road will soon be pushing in to secure I the rich traffic which exists in Utah territory terri-tory and unless justice is done by present lines our people will turn their business to other routes |
