Show THAT NEW ORLEANS BUTCHERY One blushes for his countrymen whe n he reads of the exhibition ot barbarism and savagery in New Orleans yesterday morning morn-ing and he is compelled to ask if after all civilization is not a conspicuous failure in one of the chief cities of the republic Nor does it help the matter any to bo told that the men who incited the mob and those who led it were the foremost citizens of tho place Rather would we have been told that they ware the rabble the thieves and burglars and highwaymen for when leading lead-ing men in a great city will deliberately defy tho law and with premeditation and forethought go to jail and Jan and shoot eleven men who had been regularly tried and acquitted society is in a deplorable deplora-ble condition and laws and courts are rank humbugs To be consistent the same mob which shot down and banged the miserable Italians should now string up the jurors who said the men accused of the Qisasaino S ton of Chief of Police HEN ESSY had not been shown to be guilty We are saying noUsg in favor of the murderous Italians We have no sympathy sympa-thy for them and would be pleased i the whole horde of foreignborn thieves and cutthroats could be driven from the country coun-try and i our gates were effectually closed against every alien who could not present evidence of his good moral and lawabiding character I is the chief curse of this country that the scum and scoundrels of all the word are permitted to make their homes within the republic It will be a happy day for this country when the man who is so i bad that he cannot live in his native land shal be denied asylum in America But we should at least respect our own ourts and our own laws before asking others to do so I we turn mobs and hangmen hang-men whom our laws say are innocent and our courts set free are we not worse than the fellows against whose presence in tho land l we protest It will be surprising if yesterdays disgraceful dis-graceful incident does not develop into an international matter of grave importance I would certainly do so if Italy were in a position to enforce a demand de-mand for justice to her citizens The United States sonichandso are so so powerful power-ful that they can smile at any demand for retribution which Italy may present just as the leading citizens of New Orleans were so rich and so powerful that they could lead a mob to prison and shoot and hang a dozen defenseless Italians but if Italy shall present a claim there will be so much justice and righteousness in it that the United States great as they are ought to give it respectful hearing and due consideration con-sideration I |
