Show I Manufacture of Paper Pulp I t The manufacture of paper pulp under I the sulphite process begins with taking the bark from the wood hacking out the discolored dis-colored or decayed parts and cutting with knives across the grain of the wood at an angle of about 45 degs making thin chips i i Tho latter are then elevated to the top of 1 the mill and dropped into large drums made of metal which are usually < 11 feet in diameter and 24 feet long and strong enough to sustain a pressure of from 75 to 300 pounds to tho square inch This drum is packed full of chips and then filled with a chemical composed of sulphuric acid etc The product which comes out like cottonas white a snowis pressed dry and washed then mixed with water again rolled fat and cut into shape for bundling At this stage of the process the pulp is 6 i per cent water and 40 per cent fiber Thus bundled it is hastily forwarded to the paper mill One cord of spruce makes 1500 pounds of dry fiber One cord of pop lar makes 1200 pounds of dry fiber Dry fiber is worth at present SI50 per 100 pounds making the product from one cord o f spruce sell at 2350 Usually the price is I 1 1 L per 100 pounds delivered at paper mills The freight must be paid on the water just j the same as though it was material and the only function it performs is to keep the fiber in a condition to mix over again quickly before it is used I it were shipped dry to paper mills it would pack so hard it would be useless New York telegram I |
