Show TIlE SUNDAY SALOOX The city council of Oakland California has recently received the following petition peti-tion which speaks for itself We the citizens of Oakland respectfully ask you to pass an ordinance requirlngl al = the saloons to abe closed from 0 j oclock Saturday evening until 0 j oclock Monday morning Because Be-cause IOpen saloons are not needed on the weekly restday Saloonkeepers as well as others need tho rest and the opportunities which the day affords 3 Open Sunday saloons are schools of vice and temptation to young men JThey are disturbers of the peace and they lead to debauchery and crime If closed on Sunday our Monday morning police courts would not be so crowded with drunkards and criminals 5Many industrious laborers husbands and fathers spend in these Sunday saloons much of thoir earnings of the previous week Thus such saloons are robbers of poor families GAs it is now lawful and practicable > > to close the saloons on election days much moro should it be done on our weekly restdav iIt would do wrong to none but good to all classes and multitudes of the best citizens would be grateful to the council It may be urged that the argument for Sunday closing is equally good for closing saloons altogether but we think not That has been tried and with poor results That intemperance is one of the greatest evils of the day chargeable with a very large percentage of the crime that is committed com-mitted we suppose no one will dispute Nor will many deny that saloons are the cause of most of the intemperance but to argue thence to prohibition is mere foolishness foolish-ness The sale of spirituous liquors can not be abolished nor would it be in all respects best to abolish it if that could be done but the sale can be regulated and restrained re-strained Closing the saloons on Sunday is one of the most wholesome and sensible regulations regula-tions possible No one consistently object ob-ject to such a salutary restraint on liquor selling Let that much be done in our city |
