Show THE SURPLUS SILVER JBnllion Some Twelve Million Ounces to Be Purchased THAT IS THE PRESENT Of > the Republican Senators It Will JBe Fur > chased at a Kate Not to Exceed Three Millions a Month VAsgIyGToy Dec 17The caucus of Republican Senators tonight adopted tho > financial scheme reported by the caucus committee with the exception of the 2 percent per-cent bond project which was eliminated The measure will provide for the purchase of the 12000000 ounces of silver bullion surplus a reduction of the compulsory requirements of bond deposits de-posits by national banks the extension ex-tension of national bank circulation to the full amount of the bond deposits and the replacement of the deficiency in tho national na-tional bank circulation when below 800 010000 by treasury notes based on > silver bullion purchases There is1 a provision for free coinage when silver Is maintained at par for one year Also a provision for a charge on the conversion of gold coin into bars aHd the recoinago of subsidiary silver coins This measure was not satisfactory in every detail to all the Senators but was accepted as the best possible compromises Tho caucus also instructed the committeo on rules to prepare and report a cloture rule It is understood it will be formed ann the lines of the rule proposed last session by Senator Hoar and will provide for ordering or-dering the previous question on any pending pend-ing proposition after reasonable time has been allowed for debate This rule is not to be reported until a financial bill has been presented to the Senate by the financed committee The 12000000 ounces of silver bullion is to bo purchased during the calendar year not exceeding 3000000 ounces in any one month and is in addition to the amount now required to be purchased monthly Number Banto Holding Government Money WASHINGTON Dec 17In response to a resolution of the House Acting Secretary Nettleton has sent that body a list showing the several banks in which public money is deposited the purpose for which deposited etc It shows there are 202 of these banks 187 of welch aro marked general anal fifteen marked surplus The banks marked general have active accounts receiving and disbursing public moneys daily and were designated as depositories for the convenience of public officers in in their vicinity Those marked surplus have inactive accounts They simply received > re-ceived on deposit to the credit of the treasurer treas-urer of the United States when first designated desig-nated the amount they were allowed to hold in proportion to the amount of United States bonds furnished as security therefore there-fore there has since been no change in such accounts except for the purpose of reducing reduc-ing the holdings of said depositories by truusicr 10 Ut5 u has been or is now paid into the treasury by any of such depositories in rdtttnl for the use of public funds Authority to designate I des-ignate the banks as depositories is contained ute con-tained m section 5153 of the revised stat |
