Show TUB PEOVO VlClOEY The Democracy of Provo are to be congratulated con-gratulated on the splendid victory which I they achieved on Monday and all the people peo-ple are to be congratulated on the excellent excel-lent government which has been elected It was a pcculiarly mean fight which was made against the party in that city but it failed as it should have dono and as we hope to see tbat kind of a light always fail If a political party cannot succeed except through the employment of improper im-proper and illigitimate influences It ought to go to the wall If it cannot rest on its principles ir it cannot convince by proper argument it should fall and go to pieces We hopo and believe the election in Provo will serve as a lesson to certain Republicans who do not confine themselves to legitimate methods in their efforts to gain adherents but seek to influence influ-ence people by telling them that such and such a man prominent in the church is a Republican hence they should be Republicans Republi-cans Men of sense and spirit resent this style of political argument regarding it as an insult to their intelligence and independence inde-pendence If men dont openly take offense of-fense at such solicitation it is because they are weak intellectually or Itcking in that I peculiar kind of independent spirit which is characteristic of the true American We havo not heard that high church officials interfered In the Provo election elec-tion but it is certain that an effort was put forth to make it appear to the people that leading churchmen would prefer the election ol the Republican ticket and we believe that in resentment of this attempted L employment of an illegitimate influence tho people have given a handsome Democratic Dem-ocratic majority THE HEHALD rejoices I with its friends over their triumph and is confident they will give such an excellent administration as will make the party invincible in-vincible in the Garden city |
