| Show KEAR RECAPTUREI1 The Desperate Crook Outwitted by the Officer CLEVER WORK OF CANNON BURT Kearn is Undoubtedly the Man Who Rob bed Hr Woods He Was Bound for Denver William Wood jr who resides at40S Wall street went home Saturday evening about 12 oclock He had about S175 with him and as ho entered the house ho threw the money on the table While he was eating his supper he heard a noise and a few seconds later heard the window move the inside door having been left open He stepped across the room to get some matches when in popped a fellow with a big gun covered him and told him not to move or he would kill him dead Mr Wood was entirely unarmed and he went into another room and gave the alarm As he returned he saw the fellow making away with the sack and its contents He then went through the house and endeavored to head him off but the fellow again pulled the gun and threatened instant death to anyone any-one who came near him He thus got away with the boodle Before this however how-ever he went through upstairs bedroom and relieved some of the boys of 10 and a watch and a pocket knife climbing over I their bed in order to gee there A young I man was sleeping out on the porch and he I was relieved of an empty purse which he threw back on the lawn with a chew of tobacco to-bacco in it When the officers learned of the robbery I they at once came to the conclusion that I the fellow was no ordinary thief but I one of those dare devil crooks whose audacity is only equaled by their readiness to proceed to extrevne measures to accomplish their purpose Kearn the desperado who escaped from the marshals office last week while undergoing trial for resisting an officer employed such methods in his work and the officers were inclined to believe that he was the man Deputy Marshal Bowman Cannon had been on the fellows trail ever since his escape an4 last evening a plan which he had matured was with the assistance of Sheriff Burt successfully carried out The officers had 1 reason to believe that Kearn would attempt to leave town on the Rio Grande Western and they wore at the depot early in the afternoon Cannon with whom Kearn was acquainted wore a simple but effective disguise and he sauntered around the depot until about 7 oclock when a young man attired In a stylish black suit and a white duster and wearing goggles attracted his attention One glance was sufficient to satisfy the deputy that he had spotted his man and he signaled to the brawny sheriff who was near at hand Then before their victim had a chance to think the steel bracelets were on nis wrists and he was on his way to Marshal Parsons office When the trio arrived ar-rived there Kenya was searched and the first article found was the identical watch stolen from Mr Woods A further search revealed the fact that Kearn had a ticket to Denver and 120 in cash The cost of the ticket with some other trinkets the prisoner had purchased with the cash found in his possession made up the exact amount stolen from Mr Woods so that there is no doubt but that he is the man who did this very neat piece of work Kearn was considerably crestfallen over his capture but he soon regained his spirits and chatted freely with the officers He stated that he had been on the streets frequently and on last Saturday night witnessed wit-nessed the labor parade from Walkers corner He will now be sentenced for the offense of which he was convicted last week and his connection with the Woods robbery will be investigated Both Deputy Marshal Cannon and Sheriff Burt are to be congratulated upon their clever work |
