Show Austin Gibbous Defeats Andy Bowen NEW OULEANS Dec 29Andy Bowen and Austin Gibbons fought tonight with five ounce gloves in the Metropolitan club for a purse of 2500 Both men weighed in under 133 pounds Both men looked well on entering the ring Gibbons was the taller by several inches while Bowen looked a typical gladiator with shoulders and chest measurement of wonderful dimensions di-mensions for such a short man Prof John Duffy was referee Bowen entsred the ring at 907 and Gibbons followed a few minutes later amidst tremendous cheering The first round ended without a blow In the second Bowen landed heavily on Gibbons shoulders and neck and got away without punishment Nothing much was done then until the sixth when Gibbons led bard landing on Bowens right breast and receiving punishment pun-ishment in return Ho again led and landed heavily on Bowens body and neck i Not much was done in the seventh but in the eighth Gibbons landed four times I Bowen appeared anxious I In the ninth Gibbons hit Bowen hard on the stomach and Bowen countered heavily on Gibbons neck In the tenth Bowen got in a terrific lick on Gibbons ear and in return received two hard blows on the neck In tho eleventh Gibbons uppercut Bowen and in the twelfth there were heavy exchanges There was hard fighting in the thirteenth fourteenth and fifteenth rounas owen naving ine oest 01 it In the sixteenth Bowen landed hard on i the neck and jaw First blood lor Bowen The seventeenth was spent in sparring for wind Rounds eighteen to twentysecond were decidedly lively there being much hard 1 fighting Bowen gave most attention to Gibbons neck and succeeded in delivering I many stinging blows receiving punishment punish-ment in return but evidently had the best I of it up to the end of the twentieth round The twentyfirst and twentysecond rounds ended in Gibbons favor Bowen receiving hard blows on the neck From the twentysecond to the thirty first round honors were about even In the thirtysecond there was heavy figutine with honors easy though Gibbons appeared to have the best of the hitting The contest was somewhat flagging up to the fortieth round when Bowen hit Gibbons Gib-bons on the neck then in the eye and finally a terrible lick on the nose staggering stagger-ing him From the fortyfirst to tho fortyfifth round inclusive there were many exchanges ex-changes of blows with Bowen apparently having the best of the body hitting Fortysixth Sharp infighting without serious results I Fortyseventh Gibbons hit Bowen about I the stomach and a claim of foul was not allowed Sharp exchanges followed FortyeighthAfter some hard blows there was severe infighting After breaking break-ing away Gibbons hit Bowen a heavy blow in the stomach More cries of foul but not allowed Bowen was on the ropes and very groggy The referee ordered Gibbons to his corner amid tremendous cheering from Gibbons admirers The referee then dA Gibbons the winner of tho contest Bowen was helpless on the ropes and couldnt como to time I |
