Show OLD FOLKS AT PLEASANT GROVE A Grand Time at the Gathering of the Silver Hairs A Pleasant Grove correspondent writes It was doubtless refreshing news to the Lehi peoplo to read in yesterdays HERALD that they had given the old folks a grand banquet at tho Central school house Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove people arc entitled to this credit as the banquet was at this place THE HEKALD inadvertantly made the error The party given to the old folks here was a grand success The ward teachers waited upon every aged person and widow in their i respective districts with carriages to coney con-ey them to the city hal where the committee com-mittee with tho Pleasant Grovo brass band greeted them with sweet music Elder John J Hayes invoked the blessing of the Lord upon the assemblage not forgetting for-getting the chief executive Congress and all persons in authority after which Ben jamin W Driggs Esq in a most happy ad dress congratulated the veterans explaining ex-plaining that the purpose of the gathering gatherng was to show the regard and esteem felt for the fathers and mothers who have borne the heat and burden of the day assuring as-suring them that they are honored and respected and that the day was for their enjoyment In the meantime the committee consisting of the fair maidens and young men who volunteered had five largo tables in the Central school fve laiden with choice viands to building palate and satisfy the appetite and to these the old people were conducted It was a veritable banquet and a happier company is seldom seen Everyone present seemed to vie with each other in trying to make the occasion pleasant and notwithstanding at least two hundred persons partook of the feast there was enough untouched to feed as many more This was distributed among the poor of the city and those unable to at tend After the dinner the company at re turned to the hall to be entertained with short speeches recitations songs and music Bishop John Brown one of the pioneers recited some ot his early experiences experi-ences contrasting tho Utah of today with what it was in 1847 One old la aged ninety years sang a song while visiting storytelling and the interchange vsitug time experiences made the hours pass swiftly by and it was unanimously agreed that hereafter the second day of January shall bo observed at Pleasant Grove as Old Folks Day A grand ball for the married gand bal maried people con eluded one of the most enjoyable times ex perienced here for many years VISITOIU |
