Show THKRE is pending in the U S Supremo court a case involving the construction of the contract labor act Some time ago Rev E WALPOLE WARREN a celebrated English clergyman was invited to New York to take charge of the church of the Holy Trinity but when he came the officers offi-cers of the church were sued for violating the law and fined 81000 each The case was taken to the U b District court on appeal determined against the church and again appealed to the highest tribunal in the land where it came up for argument last Thursday Counsel for the church argued it was not the intention of Congress to exclude ministers of the gospel coming here under contract but simply laborers mechanics and ordinary workmen From newspaper correspondents it appears that nearly every one of the judges took part in the discussion and their questions showed that the language of the act was too plain to admit of any doubt Judge BREWER asked if it was not as absurd to prevent the incoming of an honest laborer as of an Episcopal minister One of the assistant attorneysgeneral was going to argue the question in behalf of tbe United States but the interrogations of the judges impressed im-pressed him with the belief It would not be necessary I |
