Show AMUSEMENTS V THE CHORALS SPECULA SPECUL-A hour and a quarter was that given by the Choral society at the Assembly hal last evening in the presence of probably a thousand peoplemembers of the various choirs and other musical assemblies of the city who had assembled in response to an invitation from the board of directors of the Choral An informal programme was rendered or perhaps it would be more proper ta rehearsed since everything was conducted just as if one of the societys regular meetings were going forward One or two pieces were gone through twice and when all did not go to suit Conductor Stephens he rapped his stick and started over again Six numbers were given four choruses an organ solo Russian church air and variations vari-ations excellently rendered by Mrs Hamilton tonand a selection The Aeels Serenade Sere-nade rendered by the Guitar and Mandolin club and twice encored The choral did some fine work giving the Soldiers Chorus from Faust Noble Chic from a Russian opera the prize Welsh glee Summer and th6 glorious Tanhauser selection Hail Bright Abode The Summer was the best thing done the Tanhauser piece is a magnificent one but is not yet completely conquered During Dur-ing the evening Dr Vincent one of the directors di-rectors explained the objects of the choral said it had 250 members and wanted 400 to make it entirely selfsup porting It was now in excellent condition owing largely to the generosity of tue church authorities in allowing the I use of the hall and organ free and he earnestly asked all singers to enroll themselves them-selves a > active members and all interested inter-ested in music generally to join as honorary V members The fee was only SI for a season sea-son of sixteen meetings There was much applause and the first rehearsal of the I school without doubt will swell its membership mem-bership list and increase the public interest inter-est felt in the institute which is already a decided credit to the city THE HIT OPENIKO To gain an idea of the two widely differing differ-ing worlds that exist here in Salt Lake to see at once the upper crust and the substratum sub-stratum of society one only had to step from the brilliant glare and L beauty of the Salt Lake theatre a short distance south t the new variety theatre which threw open its doors for the iirst time last evening The standing aud iL L seating capacity is estimated at 900 and I probably 2000 or 3000 people tried to got into that space and about 1000 succeeded mostly policemen and soldiers Had Mayor Scott needed the force to quell a riot last night or had General Miles notified the post to start for Pine Ridge forthwith both would in all probability have had their reqGisitonF returned with the endorsement en-dorsement jSTichts Kommt Heraus which being interpreted means Nixey Tho sign No Standing Room was early hung out and the box ottics man locked up and disappeared Inside the air could almost be carved and the prima donnas on the stage could hardly take their high notes for tobacco smoke There wen chairs downstairs but in the gallery nearly every one stood up There were two stall S lose to the stage both occupied by flashy gentlemen who blew gracefu I clouds of smoke at the damsels who cam out and spoke their little pieces In the house was a riff raff miscellaneous assemblage as-semblage the sight of which was a study There were a good many dudes in swallowtails swallow-tails who ran down from the ball just to see what it looked like and were disappointed disap-pointed to find it not so pronounced as they uad hoped for Cowboys tinhorners highertoned gamblers and the rug tag and bobtail element generally swarmed smoked and spit There was not a female visage to be seen off the stage The show consisted of twenty variety acts presented in i swift succession from S to 1130 There were some good features some fair some poor but asa as-a wholeit was neither better nor worse than many a variety show which has been seen in the town before Tho contortionist ist and club swinger is excellent The females generally are dizzy but they were on the best of terms with everyone in front cried ont to the orchestra to go faste or slower and were in turn yelled at familiarly by the galleries in such endearing endear-ing terms as rats go it old gal go lose yourself run up and down etc The applause was vociferous and deafening The show is announced to go every night this week with a change of bill next Monday Mon-day The bar in the basement was not open and a principal source of revenue was cut off It was stated in the audience that a license had been applied for and refused this was denied and one of the proprietors said the place would be open tonight Some one else said the city council would settle whether or not a license should be issued to the bar at this evenings session |
