Show A Big Fire in Omaha OMAHA July 2SSpecial telegram to THEHERALD One of the most exciting and at the same time one of the most threatening fires which Omaha has ever known visited this city this morning I laid waste nearly three quarters of a block at Sixteenth and Chicago streets throwing between fifty and seventyfive people out of employment and for the time indeed threatening threat-ening the northeast portion of the city Had it not been for the intervention of Jefferson square on the north notwithstanding notwith-standing the gallant efforts of the firemen it is difficult to estimate what damage might have been sustained The flames were fanned to madness by a fierce gale from the southwest which strongly suggested sug-gested the fated October 9 so many years ago which laid Chicago in ruins A more dangerous conflagration was never faced by a band of firemen and no more successful work than that of the firemen of this city today may be credited to the fire fighters of any land As it is the loss will aggregate aggre-gate 60000 I |
