Show Mexican Ore and Smcltinglnterests WASHINGTON March 12The Senate has ordered a vote on the Blair bill to be taken at 3 oclock Thursday the 20th inst A F Meyer president of the Kansas City Refining and Smelting company appeared ap-peared before the committee on ways and means this morning and read a statement expressive of the smelting and refining interests in-terests upon the subject of Mexican lead and silver ores He contended that Congress Con-gress never intended that silver ore con I taming lead should be dutiable as no such ore had been developed in tnis country i when the provision which has been attacked at-tacked was inserted in the tariff laws If i Congress passed a law taxing this ore it would criuple the smelting and refining interests in-terests He therefore requested the committee com-mittee to let the matter stand as it does under un-der the last decision of the treasury department de-partment The House committee on territories today to-day heard an argument by Thomas Smith of New Mexico in favor of the admission of that territory as a state |
