Show THE WORLDS FAIR The Board of Lady Managers Report Upon the Duties of the Director Dutes Drector General CHICAGO Nov 21The board of lady managers of the Worlds fair today adopted a constitution similar to that of the national commission Miss Sarah T Hallowell of Chicago was recommended t the national commission for appointment appoint-ment to the position of director of the department de-partment of fine arts Mrs Lucas of Pennsylvania introduced a resolution asking the closing of the S Worlds fair on the Sabbath day so far as it was affected by barter and exchange After debate this went over At a meeting of the national commission the of the report committee on foreign affairs was adopted with a resolu tion authorizing the committee to expend 20000 in sending agents abroad as provided pro-vided in the act of Congress no expendi ture however to be made until the Presi dent shall have issued his proclamation to the various nations At the afternoon session the special committee com-mittee on the relations of the commission I and the local board and the powers and du I ties of the diractorireneril made its re I port I says that all the powers of the I commission should be exercised in large measure through the directorgeneral The report practically reproduces section G of tho national act de fining the powers of the commission to have intercourse with all the exhibitors and says it is the committees opinion that its powers are in no way abridged by rea sjn of tho fact that the larger portion of the funds are to be raised through the instrumentality in-strumentality of the local corporation It is the opinion of the committee that I fund when raised iSa public fund and that the commission by the act of Congress and with the consent of the Illinois corpora tion is t specify its purpose and it is to be controlled and expended by the agency named by said act of Congress Regarding the directorgeneral the report re-port says that under tim organization he is the officer existing whom space is to be allotted to exhibitors dassificaton determineu upon and executed and through whom the commission and its committees are generally gen-erally to have charge of intercourse withal with-al exhibitors and foreign nations Another paragraph concedes that the rules and regulations of the exposition are to originate with the local board but adds that they are to be approved by the ua tional commission and be underthe supervision super-vision of its directordeneral The report also recommeuds a conference with the local board It was unanimously adopted The Naional Live Stock association committee today objected to the action acton of the Worlds fair commission in deciding that no cash prizes shall be shal offered for live stock It was decided that 20000 should be appropriated for premiums either by the commission or local board This money to bo Distributed among various classes as follows Horses 41 per cent cattle 2 per cent swine 15 per cent sheep 12 per cent poultry 7 percent per-cent A communication was received from the national commission informing the committee com-mittee that the money would either have to come from the local directory or Congress Con-gress There was another exciting debate be fore adjournment over the report of the committee on finance Commissioner Wailer spoke of the general impression among the people at largo that most of the salaries paid by the commission were outrageously largo D White of New Mexico presented Ia reso lution calling for thai cutting in two of all salaries except directorgenerals Martindale wanted to cut all but the di rectorgenerals to 5000 a year After a hot debate and any number of amendments the whole matter n referred t the committee com-mittee on jndiciary and finance |
