Show Secretary Proctor on the Situation WASHINGTON Nov 2L Acting Indian Commissioner Belt this afternoon received a telegram from Special Agent Cooper at Pine Ridge agency saying the Indians are still dancing The police report that thirty Rosebud Indians had arrived at this reservation reser-vation and six hundred or seven hundred more were en route to the agency We hope to settle this Indian craze without bloodshed All kinds of rumors are in circulation cir-culation In the course of the afternoon the follow folow ing telegram was received at the war de partmentlrom General Miles The num ber of Indians going from Rosebud agency to Pino Ridge agency is increasing agency Reliable advices show that their Mes siah craze is extending to our Indians near the mountain border and between the Sioux nation and Canadian border Secretary Proctor carried tho dispatch t the cabinet meeting and it there formed the subject of discussion Secretary Proctor says the suggestion made by General Miles that troops in other divisions I than his own command be got in readiness to reinforce him had already been anticipated antici-pated Orders have been sent to the commanding com-manding officers of troops as far south as I Texas and Arizona and as far west as S California to prepare their men for im mediate movement if an emergency arises In any event it is the intention of the de partment to heavily reinforce the troops in Dakota during the winter and winterand they will be moving in from other divisions from time to time In this way it is expected the department will be able to mass an over whelming force at places where excitement I is the highest so as to exctement suppress an Indian uprising in the spring time |
