Show AMUSEMENTS THE CAMPOBELLO CONCERT Signor C iampobello labored most arduously to give Salt Lake as ambitious a concert ambitous pro gramme as she ever had rendered yet espite all his endeavors we are forced to ecord the unfailing verdict not a finan cal success With all her musical taste Salt Lake seems to set her foot both feet down on concertsthat is unless they are of the monster order given in tho tab rnacie with half a thousand voices and he great organ t back them Afterthe astes she has had of concerts on that order nothing else seems to suffice But the pro gramme last evening was one in every way worthy of general and generous sup port Besides Mr Campobello himself him-self Miss Porter his wife Miss loyle and Mr Jvrouse there was a l arge orchestra presided over in turn by Careless Krouse and Stephens the Mise i rere chorus behind the scenes and tho Sol I diers chorus from Trovatore rendered in i costume by bore twenty or thirty gen t lemen of the Choral temen societyenough one would think to suit all tastes Campo belo was the strong feature of the night lot since ho was first heard here with Ab b ott has Tie been in such good form as he wan in last night and his voice above and below was as clear and resonant as we ever beard it in his best days Evidently life in Salt Lake is giving him back all his I old vigor and freshness He was easy and b > reezily delightful in his acting Miss Porter was well received I wel and made the recipient re-cipient of some handsome flowers She was given a recall < for her Traviata and Trovatore selections Her voice is one of great range her E flat above being taken with precision but the high notes are not sympathetic in quality Her cbs l ng duowith her husband was injured by a l ittle hitch in the orchestra and we think a happier operatic selection could have been madeto show off both artiststhan the scene from Pasquale The music is charming but the action expresses nothing hat interests an audience and the soprano i n it should be a clover at actincr as the I Baritone which Miss Porter is not Miss Doyle made an excellent impression and did Abbotts old song from Mignon charm l ugly sho was recalled and given some I beautiful flowers for an encore she gave I a selection Hardly Happy Her duo I with Miss Porter was also well rendered both voices blending very artistically The I Iiseie chorus was effective and Miss Porter and Mr Krouse who sang the invisible in-visible tenor solo were recalled The Soldiers chorus under Stephens wen with a vim and was also recalled Mr Krouse accompanied and besides rendered a solo which was heartily redemanded HERRMANNS TRANSATLANTIQOES arrive in their special train from the east and play in the theatre tonight DONT LIKE THE NEW SYSTEM To the Editor of THE HEUALD We have a very handsomely decorated theatre at present but there is one thing that a number of its patrons would like t call attention to that is tho system of sell ing seats formerly the ticket seller was not above marking those seats that were sold then a patron could take in the situation situa-tion at a glance now one must take what the ticket seller chooses to give The sys tern of marking those seats that are sold ian i-an excellent one and should be reinstated SOME OF THE PATRONS OF THE THEATRE |
