Show THAT ALL editors have not lost their heads over the Mormon question is evidenced by the following which appeared ap-peared in the New York Evening Pu tIt t-It must be confessed that editors who write of the Mormons5andT antiMor mon legislation in i a way to indicate sanity are rare indeed but now and then one shows up Here is what the Post editor says of infamous Tucker bll1b f irV d i The antiMormon bill as passed by the House yesterday preserves the main features of the act as it was sent over from the Senate last winter The most important new departure in this measure is the section which annuls all territorial establishing the religious corporation known as the Church of Jesus Christ of LatterDay Saints and thecorporatlon known as the Perpetual Fund VTYifirrnHnTi Pnrrmnnv and mattes It the duty of the AttorneyGeneral to dissolve these corporations It is through these corporations that the Mormon Church has done its work and eto destruction undoubtedly a terrloleblowfortne hierarchy hierar-chy At the same time it must be admitted that the North Carolina member who op posed the bill on the ground that this prop osition is unconstitutional made out a strong case The constitution provides that Congress shall malieno1I respectlng an establishment of religion or prohibiting the 1 tt fe f ff free exercise thereof and it is certainly a grave question whether under this provision It has a right to dissolve a religiouscopora tion because members of the corporation break the laws Ihe principle that a legis lative body may thus interfere in religious matters is a dangerous to establish and its adoption In this case is theless exc sable s-able because there seems no doubt that po lygamy could be overthrown without recourse re-course to so doubtful an expedient |
