Show Jefferson Davis At Rest NEW ORELANS Dee 7The remains of Jefferson Davis are lying in state in the council chamber of the city hal The coffin rests upon a catafalque devoid of much ornamentation The casket has a sil ver plate upon which is the simple inscription inscrip-tion Jefferson Davis At Rest with date of death Badges of the confederate associations asso-ciations the flag of the Washington artil lery carried through the war and a bunch of wheat and a pair of crossed Spanish daggers dag-gers fastened together with purple ribbon C are the only other ornaments The room is darkened and although ems up by clusters of electric lights their brilliancy is dimmed by the sable drapery Soldiers in uniform stand guard Stacks of arms and cannon arc in the corners of the chamber and all round the walls are rows of plants and shrubbery Since early this morning the people have been pouring to obtain a last look at the dead All classes are represented rep-resented in the procession by the bier The number of colored people is marked Jhe mourning is general and every place or prominence in the city has put on black A noteworthy event this morning was the telegram sent by Mayor Shakespeare t Secretary of War Proctor officially notify ing him of the death of exSecretary Davis and of the date of the funeral |
