Show The Daily Wreck BANGOR Maine February 23A wreck on the European North American Amer-ican Railroad at Boyds Station is reported re-ported here It is understood that the fireman engineer and a postal clerk were killed and a number of people inured t in-ured William D Mndgett railway I postal clerk John Campbell English nail clerk and Harry Goodman fire I man were killed and burnei in the wreck Angell engineer wasSseriously injured No passengers were reported seriously injured up to this time The cars caught fire from the losomotive The mail baggage and p rlor cars were burned together with express mail matter and bageage Mail Clerk Caleb Palmer of Bangor arrived here on the tvening train from St John He was on the mail car n the railroad accident and receivea some severe bruises He tells the story of the accident as follows When the train reached Berradg mill the scene of the accident ha wassitting on the front car Mudgitt fof Dexter chief clerk was near him with I his feet on the stove and John Campbell Camp-bell clerk was on the table When the i shook came the oar went over in a heap rolling over several times The I train consisted of baggage mail express ex-press Pullman and smoker The first two left the track but the other three kept running on the side track The mail car baggage and Pullman caught fire being consumed in fifteen minutes min-utes The train being run at lull speed a misplaced switch caused the accident Mudgett and Campbell were held as in vise by the timbers of the car and Mudgett was under the stove Camp bells back was broken A dense smoke from the burning cars and steam from the engine boiler hung over the mail car All shouted for help Mudgett cried to Palmer that ho was being burned and bade him good bye Palnjer thrust one arm through the opening and was I seen oy Conductor Dhase who attempted to pull him out but was unable to do so Threeothers joined and succeeded in pulling him out in a bruised condition Thoy were unable to reach Mudgett and Campbell before they were burned to death Henry Goodwin the fireman fire-man was killed and Julius Angle was seriously injured but none of the passengers were hurt |
