Show A BRUTAL ASSAULT A Colored Mans Head Cat Open with a Drill Thomas Hannahan the keeper of a secondhand store on Commercial Street was arrested Monday evening on a complaint sworn to by Sylvester wellknown colored man James a charging him with assault The case came np before Judge Pyper yesterday adduced was to the and the evdence effect that one of the frail colored girls who was recently jugged for vagrancy had occupied a room in the store kept 3 by Hannahan At the request of the I female James went with a wagon on I Monday evening to remove her goods trnnk clothing etcfrom her room Hannahan refused to let James have the articles belonging belong-ing to the colored dame giving it too late ao a reason therefor that was in the evening and told James that he must call again Hot words were soon given and taken and Hannahan threw ott his coat with the evident intention of desreasinii the colored population by one He thought better of it rand r-and put his emit on again but to throw it off once more and referred to the colored man in no particularly compli montary terms He then redonned his coat and going into his store picked up aniron drill about three feet long and I an inch in diameter and dealt James a I heavy blow on the head cutting a gash L alJut two inches long and felling the colored man to the earth Hannahan t did not deny the striking but claimed that he was mrely acting in in elf defense as James was coming at him with a pitchfork and would doubtless doubt-less have made matters exceedingly warm for him had he been allowed to carry out his designs The evidence however in this regard was not borne out by the other testimony intro iuced and there aid not appear to be any justification jus-tification for such a fearful onslau bas b-as was made Judge Pyier m pass ing sentence thoroughlv reviewed the testimony introduced and took occasion occa-sion to remark that the blow was u heavy and savage one from which it was very probable James would suffer as long as he lived It wa not often that such an aggravated case came before be-fore him and it certainly men ed severe punishment The defendant was sentenced sen-tenced to a term of imprisonment of thirty days and to pay a fine of 99 General Maxwell attorney for defendant de-fendant counseled with his client for a moment and then announced that he would take an appeal and that bonds would be filed this morning I |
