Show SCOTT is SANFORD The Owner of the Slave at the Time of the Decision PERSECUTION OF MISSIONARIES IntTurkeyWllliam OBrien Is Released Islavin Anxious to Meet SmithEx King of the Dudes SpecialtoTnc HERALD Examiner Dispatch NEW YOKK Dec 20In tho library of the late S L M Barlow which with his pictures bricabrac curios etc is soon to bo sold by auction to close out the estate is an excerpt from the nineteenth volume of Howards United States Supreme Court reports containing opinions of Chief Justice Jus-tice Taney Justices Wayne Nelson Daniels and Campbell and the dissenting opinions of Justices McLean and Curtis in the Dred Scott case rendered in March 1S57 The excerpt is bound in book form and has on the flyleaf in the handwriting of Barlow this note At the time of the decision de-cision of this case Dred Scott belonged tome to-me As explained by P T Barlow today the ownership came about thus S L M Barlows father was executor the estate of S F A Sandford owner of Dred Scott when that celebrated chattel sued to recover re-cover his freedom on the ground that having I hav-ing lived in a free state with his previous master he was no longer a slave Sanford died before the case was decided and Bar low being an intimate friend became his executor He was accordingly in that capacity capa-city owner of Dred Scott when the United States supreme court decided that slaves were property and nothing else Sanford married a daughter of T E Davis His widow is now living in Paris Their daughter is the wife of Count Maurice Sala charge d affaires of the French legation lega-tion at Washington |
