Show TWIN MINDS If it would notbe considered treasonable TIlE HERALD would make the suggestion I that there are two hearts that beat as I one in the breasts of our governor and Senator PADDOCK Governor THOMAS says Some federal agency should be authorized to appoint the following county officials selectmen clerks recorders superintendents of dis drict schools and assessors PADDOCK asks that the governor be empowered em-powered to appoint selectmen clerk red re-d corder assessor and superintendent of district schools in and for each and all of the counties of said territory There is such a wonderful sameness of our governors suggestion and our ex commissioners bill that with no great degree de-gree of expansion of the imagination a person per-son could bring himself to think that one master mind had evolved from its fertile brain both the recommendation and the bill True the Senators bill has transposed trans-posed the governors recommendation so that the former can drop an s or two and assessor comes in for aplace in advance of superintendent of district schools These great changes and transpositions meet with THE Hlu Los full and hearty approval Had PADDOCK enlarged upon the governors recommendation and added county treasurers and collectors wo could then have given hIm credit for having an original idea The very day that PADDOCK introduced his bill to have the governor of Utah empowered em-powered to appoint to all of the county offices that would be of any value for the Liberal party to hold he introduced one fur tile erection of a public building in this city asking for a 200000 appropriation I Cue trip of ARTHUR L THOMAS PADDOCKS fellow commissioner to Washington to labor for a 5500000 public building shows plainly that PADDOCK was not as careful in following the governors recommendations for a federal building as for the federal agency to appoint county officers It may here be remarked that after THOMAS reached Washington the Senator sent in another bill which proposes to appropriate half a million dollars for a building in Salt Lake This fact is mentioned merely as another incident going to showhow closely together the minds of these two statesmen run in all matters in any way relating to Utah THE HERALD is a little surprised that inasmuch in-asmuch as the probat judges and all of the jurors j are in the hands or the liberals the governor did not also ask for the privilege privil-ege of appointing county collectors and treasurers There is nothing like going in for the whole hog while you are about it and modesty has never been one of the characteristics charac-teristics of the ordinary Republican officeholder office-holder ARTHUR L THOMAS recommendation recommenda-tion proves that modesty and he have long since parted company and it is difficult for us to understand why the two offices of collector and treasurer should not also have been asked for Perhaps the governor had the history of the Republic of Tooele in his mind when he failed to ask for these offices It is not so long ago that we have forgotten for-gotten the circumstance of the collection of taxes in the Republic on transient sheep herds and how the money thus gathered failed to find its way into the treasury that is so it appeared to the grand jury Theparty who collected the taxes was indicted and his case was put off time after time until years had rolled around and the day had passed throughthe running of the statute of limitation lim-itation when an official could be indicted for the offense then in came the county treasurer and swore that the party who collected the taxes had settled with him in full This confession of fraud enabled the indicted official to go scott free Our beloved governor may have had this little bit of history in his mind when he magnanimously concluded not to ask for the appointment of collectors and treasurers treas-urers as well as theother officers But then when we stop to think of the matter these offices dont amount to much anyway and the governor demonstrate his unbounded love for the people by allowing al-lowing them to retain these two dflielals1 All the governor and his Liberal friends want is the privilege of having the assessors asses-sors office when they can make the taxes of the people as much as they please and the judge clerk and selectmen so they can spend these taxes as they please In the generosity of their souls they are willing some one else should collect the funds they are to expend and as the governor gov-ernor and sureties perhaps lack confidence in the honesty of the members of their own party they are willing the People should furnish the county treasurer Good kind generous souls They can no doubt exclaim from the governor down We are no hogs we know when we have got enough so we will allow you to collect the taxes for us to expend There is absolutely no limit to the generosity gen-erosity of soma men one of whom our governor am which likewise Senator PADDOCK |
