Show WEEVIL IN WHEAT The Possibility of the Introduction Introduc-tion of the Pest Here IT SHOULDBE GUARDED AGAINST The Danger to One Great Industry as Viewed By a Promlnett Dealer One Carload of Bad Wheat Her As a rule Utah grain has always been free from this little pest whose name Is given above but we have it on the best of gven authority that a carload of wheat arrived in Salt Lake yesterday shipped by an Ogden firm from the south which is virtuallyalive with the insects and unless great c r is taken this bad carload is bound to affect and contaminate others Once let the pest be introduced said the dealer and it will take us many ears to get rid of it To what do you ascribe the appearance of the insect the present time Simply to the fact that our wheat growers are not careful enough in attending attend-ing to their granaries in not thoroughly cleaning them out every year In my travels trav-els through the country I have noticed that the farmers and other wheat dealers are prone to let the old wheat J i > REMAIN IN THE CORNEll I and other 6utoftho way places of the granaries In some instances to my positive knowledge the granaries have not been cleaned out thoroughly for a long time and weevil and other evils is the natural result Our farmers must pay more attention to the condition of their granaries or we shall soon be in a very bad fix I can tell you The inside ot the granaries should be whitewashed yearly if not oftener I have heard of cases where some parties have put lime among the wheat in order to got rid of the pest but this should not be done because it not only injures the quality qual-ity of the flour made from this wheat but also destrqys the boltingcloth in the mills All who are now purchasing wheat will dowel do-wel t inspect it closely because one carload car-load of the contaminated will affect loa containated wi afect an entire en-tire elevator Once the weevil appears in wheat and it is coed for nothing save for chicken or hog feed |
