company with General Dodge and Dr Bell has been making quite an extensive tour through Colorado and Utah gathering information concerning the resources of the country Being interviewed by an Aspen Times reporter General Gen-eral Palmer unbosomed himself quite freely He said the route of the road from Glenwood Springs will undoubtedly undoubt-edly be down the Grand River to Grand Junction Being asked for what reason the Midland and Denver Rio Grande roads would abandon the proposed routes to Utah along the White River wnen these routes are from 160 to 170 miles shorter than the route via Grand Junction he said For the re 3 son that the Midland Railway Company will only nave 130 miles to build and the Denver Rio Grande Railway Company only ninety miles to build to connect with the Denver Rio Grande Western the format at the State line and the latter at Grand Junction The distance via White River would be more than three times as great In i addition to this building down the Grand is not only tne cheapest bat the quickest method 01 getting a through line to Salt Lake a most important factor in the aevel = oumpnt of this country Then again the Denver Rio Grande Western is neutral as to both roads It can handle the business of the Denver S Rio Giande or the Midland or both or give the right of trackage to both Ninety miles of road the gap between Qlenwood Springs and Grand Junction could be built in a very short time and all of these desirable results brought about I take it too that it is mo t important that a railroad should be bunt through toe fertile and productive produc-tive valley of the Grand river and its being built is only a question of time to say the least It looks now however I that attendant circumstances should hasten its being built Within what time General should you fay that the railroads or one of them would be extended from Glen wood Springs to Grand Junction You have asked me the question directly said the General and I should answer you directly and say within ten years but it might be dons much sooner Is it not highly probable that the Midland or Rio Grande road or both will be extended from Gtenwood Springs to connect with the Denver Rio Graude Western within a few months 1 11 cannot answer for either of these roads but am prepared to speak for te Denver Rio Grande Western Uur road is preparing to widen its guaee and is buying the ties for that purpose and has already bought a great many broad gauge ties By the time that either the Midland or the Denver Rio Grande road ic extended to the Denver S Rio Grande Western from Glenwood Springs the Denver Rio Grande Western will have a broad go age road to the Colorado State line to meet them The advantage of haying hay-ing another or two other bread guage systt ms of railroad connecting Denver with Salt Lake in a more desirable way thin has hitherto been obtained can be easily seen G neral Palmer enquired particularly particular-ly r garding the resources of PItkin Garfield and Mesa counties even going into details in order to to ascertain the amount of ore shipped from Aspen weekly and as to how much went to daft Lake Pueblo Leadville and Denver Den-ver He admitted that he was deeply intel ested in the subject as a railroad man and as president of the Denver Rio Grande Western road He is a man of great vigor of mind and body and preeminently a great railroad magnate and it was difficult in the extreme ex-treme to gee the admission from him tat the great project of esterdine the Denver Rio ranoe road from Glenwood Springs to Grand Junction was the prime neces sitv for his presence in this country but the writer is satisfied that such is General Palmers object in visiting Aspen and Glenwood Springs and his pronable trip down the Grand When it is remembered that this is the man who has been the prime cause of the building of every mile of the Denver 6 R o Grande road except about some ntty miles the application of his who sells the low rate roundtrip t round-trip points his little camera at you while he gives you change It records the image of the purchaser an instant The agent pulls out the slide rubs his chemical
