Show I PHYSIOLOGY AND HYGIENE I A Singular Case of Eczema of the Face I E i and tho Means Which Afforded Belief I I A remarkable instance of eczema of the taco caused by exposure to the suns rays is t tho following reported by Dr Veiel of Con I i fitatt who tells that after all available reme I I I ar n n N > o n YhnqfPiJ rn ref was obtained 1 may agea oor nil si years wa sne oxniDitea no unusual sensitiveness of the skin but at that time when traveling in the month of April severe swelling in tho face came on without apparent cause There were red wheal like elevations combined com-bined with swelling of the eyelids These disappeared after four days confinement in her room Any exposure however to tho sun either in clear or cloudy weather re induced it The samo irritability returned next spring to cease again in autumn and winter This recurred every spring but lasted ach year a longer time tho infiltration infiltra-tion of the skin was also greater These attacks at-tacks had recurred annually for fifteen years Even in a closed apartment tho side of the face turned to tho light if near tho window showed some irritation manifested by a pap ular eczema Shortly after sunset and at night she could go out in all winds and states of tho weather Even in the keenest east wind the skin was unaffected Of many and various external remedies none gave relief most of them increased the irritation Dr Vciel next sought to discover what property of tho suns rays induced this irritability irrita-bility It was not the heat rays for she could endure the glow from a fire or oven unaffected un-affected nor the ordinary raysof light sinco neither lamp nor candle incommoded her The chemical rays were next considered and it was found in accordance with tho experi I enco of photographers that a red veil limited their influence most completely She was accordingly ac-cordingly provided with a red veil and sent out into tho open air in the height of the day The veil proved invaluable for she who could not leave her room for two minutes in July and August in the forenoon remained out with its aid repeatedly and without harm for forty minutes at a time It is suggested that excursionists who undergo un-dergo lengthy exposure to the suns rays might find great protection for the face by making use of the means which proved so effective ef-fective in the instance hero cited |
