Show BETTER STAND IJY THE LAW I I There is very rarely an instance where it is not better to let the law taka its t course in the matter of punishing the guilty Individuals and mobs may at times have been justified in their disregard regard of the statutes as In times and t places where the power of the law Is so weak and the authority so corrupt or incompetent that no hope existed of jji justice being done But where there has been one such case there has been r a thousand where great wrong was done in the disregard of the form of the law An instance of the danger of haste has just been reported from Missouri In Thursdays issue of THE HERALD a telegram tele-gram brought the particulars of a terrible ter-rible crime in Rockville A man appeared ap-peared at the door of the Anderson residence resi-dence aad asked for a glass of water a young girl fetched it when the fellow seized and chloroformed her and while in that condition outraged her person One Vanderberg was arrested ar-rested on suspicion and subjected to a preliminary examination The Justice thought there was sufficient evidence to warrant the holding of the accused for trial and so annodnced his decision fixing the bond at a good round sum probably at a much larger amount than the accused could have given But the poor fellow had no chance to rustle the bail for the Justice had no sooner announced an-nounced his decision than two or three shots were fired and when the smoke cleared away the prisoner was dead Two brothers of the injured girl were immediately placed under arrest It now transpires that Vanderberg was not the man whooutraged the girl The consequence is that the Anderson boys have been held for murder and if the law can be enforced against them they will be hanged for their unwarranted haste Utah has recently set the world a good example in her treatment of lynchers several of whom she has sent to the Penitentiary for long terms of imprisonment It is hardly probable that any more lynching will be attempted at-tempted hereabout and if there should be it is quite probable that those who indulge in it will be hanged as murderers mur-derers It would now be well for Missouri Mis-souri to use the Anderson ooys in such a way as to teach the hot headed and reckless that the laws are made to be obeyed or broken at the peril of the breakers |
