Show RAILROAD RUMP An Effort Made Towards a Compromise NATIONAL DEBT STATEMENT I Comptrollers Report Secretary Knitchild R6p Anarchist Memorial Day Etc Tbo Railroad Rumpus CHICAGO April 2This afternoon an attempt was made to get a train of twenty freight cars from the Q road to the Chicago Alton As the train passed the viaduct at Sixteenth Street the engineers of the other roads refused re-fused to allow the train to go by They stopped its progress by crossing and recrossing the tracks which intersect the road at this point These tactics Ii were kept np two hours and the Q train was finally taken back into the Western Avenue yards The Rock Island managers have declined de-clined once more to risk a tiei p of their road by atiemptiig to receive freight from their competitor the Burlington It was in vain that the officers and lawyers of the latter road telegraphed and dispatched dis-patched messengers to Rock Island this morning A verbal reply was inaly returned that the Rock Island refused to take any cars from the Burlington Bur-lington This afternoon speaking for the Rock Island Division Superintendent Chamberlain said We have not only returned a verbal answer to the Bur lin ton to the effect that we would not touch the cars but have issued a general order to our employees not to handle them An effort toward a compromise of the strike on the Chicago Burlington Quincy was made this evening by the Brotherhood of Engineers and Firemen A card embodying a concise statement of the situation from the mens statjd point but giving no new facts was issued is-sued by them HPBIWQFIELD Ohio April 2Tbe Indiana In-diana Western engineers and firemen of the Brotherhood have notified General Gen-eral Manager Henderson that if he accepts ac-cepts any more Q cars they will strike KANSAS CITY April 2At 5 olock this afternoon the switchmen and firemen fire-men in the anta Fe yards quit work in a body They will go to work on the condition that they are not required to handle Q freight CHICAGO April 2 At a secret conference con-ference of the dissatisned employees of the Michigan Cpntral road held tonight to-night definite plans for future guidance guid-ance were agreed upon but they were kept from the press The rumor is well founded that the men will refuse I to handle Q freight |
