Show A HUNDRED YEARS AGO I It is an interesting centennial reminiscence reminis-cence which Springfield Mass UnCoil I brings out as follows Just a hundred years ago the legislature of Massachusetts passed a resolution to encourage the manufacture I manu-facture of malt liquors in this state because such manufacture was held to promote pro-mote the cultivation of such grains I as are adapted to our soil and climate and produce a valuable article of export ex-port and because malt liquors on account I count of their wholesome qualities strongly recommend themselves for general use and I protect and guard against the harmful effects ef-fects of stronger liquors It was resolved that all brewers who make yearly more than a hundred barrels of beer shall be free from taxes and duties for five years Whatever else may be said of the good qualities of the sturdy statesmen of Massachusetts Massa-chusetts of a century ago they didnt build as well as we know in the above resolution It has been learned in the hundred years that malt liquors do not strongly recommend recom-mend themselves for general use on account ac-count of their wholesome qualities and we doubt that temperance people will consent that beer protects and guards against the harmful effects of stronger liquor It is claimed by those who have made a study of thnnn Hnn HHndnl 1 W W o 1 the i harmful effects of stronger liquor beer whats the appetite for some more active and energetic intoxicant It is also pointed out by these professedly knowing ones that the drink habit is usually acquired imbibing im-bibing beer and that beeiJrinkers in this country usually end as whiskydrinkers But whatever observation may have taught in the century as to the compara live evil effects from a temperance standpoint stand-point of malt and alcoholic liquors it is clear that the ancients of Massachusetts were not thoroughly up in the intoxicating qualities of beer and also that they entertained enter-tained ideas radically different from those held by some of their descendants as to the methods to be employed for developing the resources of a country |
