information in-formation in the mysterious case of the missing Irish American Dr P H Cronin came out tonight Last ni ht an officer from the Twelfth street station arrested a young man who was trying to sell a white horse and wagon in a livery stable near the station for a small s am of money When taken to the station the man gave his name as John Brown and when asked the routine questions ques-tions al vays addressed t prisoners he betrayed be-trayed much emotion and asked for Captain ODonnell He was taken to the captains office and in the presence of several officers offi-cers told the startling story of his connection connec-tion with the mystery Today the police investigated it and found it corroborated by many oiivunistances whicli tend to show its truthfulness Brows real name is Frank G Woodruff Wood-ruff and he has been working for Dean Co livery I stable keepers at 404 Webster aenuu His story as reported to the au tnorities is to the effect that a week ago Wednesday in talking with a man named King he Woodruff had complained of being be-ing out of money having lost considerable playing cords and said that it was necessary neces-sary for him to secure something to do that would pay better than working in a livery stable King said he could put Woodruff in the way of making ones money easily Saturday evening just at dusk King called jvoodruff out of the stables and asked fit he could rat a horse and wag6h out without anyone knowing it and said he would give Woodruff if he would do it Woodruff said he could and a place of meeting at 2 oclock in the morning was agreed upon Woodruff left the wagon out of doors in an alley before going to bed and when all the other employees had retired re-tired he stole noiselessly downstairs took out a horse and hitched it up and meeting i King they drove together to a barn in the I rear of a big house on State street As ob feJlo ie oft they wheeled up in front of the barn two men came out One was a man l omm Woodruff calls Dick Fairburn the i other man Woodruff feels sure was Dr Cronin Although it was quite dark atthe I time he had several opportunities to look closely at the mans face and asserted I that he answers Cronins description in 1 many ways The other man addressed this person as Doc The three men drove straight through k the alley to First street over to Dearborn and up Dearborn to Lincoln park I heard several expressions in the conversations con-versations between the men and Woodruff which convinced me that there was a body in a trunk In the first place I noticed notce that Cronin was very anxious for us to hurry To or three times i he said Get out of here boys got out of here quick I noticed the trunk smelled as if there ww decaying flesh within it We drove i5rly to the north end of the park and then stopped a minute near some bushes King and Fairburn were with me We left Cronin at the barn and I remember as I looked at him one of his eyes was black as if he had been hit with the fist At the bushes we lifted the trunk out and I held the horse while it was opened I then saw that my suspicions were correct cor-rect There was a body in the trunk They lifted it out in seveal pieces I cant say positively whether it was the body of a man or of a woman except from one circumstance I heard King say Heres where we leave Allie Fairhurn answered Yes and if you had let Tom alone we would have had Doc in here with her These remarks passed while they were carrying what looked like a corpse King gave me 25 and told me to drive on and get rid of the trunk and get the horse into a gallop I dont think I was over fifteen minutes on the run I finally dumped out the trunk and turned back It broke open as it fell but I did not wait toe to-e in what manner it lay or just how the pieces were placed I returned to the barnWoodruff says he suspects from the conversation con-versation he overheard between Cronin Fairburn and King that the body in the trunk was that of a woman whose death resulted from an operation perhaps performed Co leJ formed by Dr Cronin He draws this Swaclusion not only from the words he overheard but also from the anxiety evinced by the doctor t get the body out of the way and from the fact that Cronin had apparently recently been struck by some one Woodruff first read of Cronins disappearance disap-pearance Tuesday and also read the story relating to the finding of the empty trunk He was greatly frightened and thinking the onlcirs were certainly on his track took means to get put of the city He had I some money remaining but decided to obtain ob-tain a little more and stole the identical horse and wagon which he had used last Saturday night The result was his arrest find confession tit JU pretty brunette named Allie or Alice Villavasou has been missing from the neighborhood near which is located the barn where Woodruff is said to have met Dr Cronin and the latters companions Her parnt are in rather humble circumstances circum-stances and heretofore little attention has been paid t her disappearance Several personals addressed to her or relating t the girl have appeared in the papers of late gr but the advertisements contain little or nothing definite Saloon Keeper Conklin with whom Cronin Cro-nin lived was informed tonight of Woodruffs Wood-ruffs statement Conklin declared there could be nothing in the story and once more insisted that the doctor had been murder mur-der by certain Irish Nationalists who according ac-cording to Couklin were enemies 01 Cronin |
