Show Col Jackson and the Collestorshlp Special to TIE HERALD Examiner Dispatch WASHINGTON April HI telegraphed you Friday night that Colonel J P Jackson Jack-son had been tendered the office of sub treasurer at San Franciseoand added there was no doubt he would accept it He did accept it in a brief interview he had with the President yesterday morning and he also accepted at the same time an invitation invita-tion from the President to dine with himself him-self and Mrs Harrison at 7 oclock Saturday Satur-day evening There is no doubt that General Harrison regrets his inabilty to appoint Colonel Jackson Jack-son collector of the port of San Francisco Mr Halford the Presidents private secretary secre-tary tells me that General Harrison spent sometime Saturday afternoon reading tho recommendations which Colonel Jackson filed for the collectorship and that when he had finished he remarked to Mr Halford that the colonels endorsements were of a character sufficient to justify his appointment appoint-ment to a cabinet position Mr Halford says Colonel Jacksons endorsers include every Republican state official in office from the governor down every Republican state official in San Francisco Republican e every publican beaO the state legislature the eight Republican presidential electors of the state and all theleadingUepublicans in the state WHO AKE NOT IN POLITICS including 11 Eaten and Mr Phelps leading lead-ing merchants bankers insurance men and others In his interview with Colonel Jackson Saturday the President said he had no alternative but to make the appointments appoint-ments in California in compliance with the slate whichthe delegation had presented to him This slate bore thename of Mr Phelps for collector The President could not go back of that I is his desire he says f hat similar action shall be taken by the delegations in the thirtyeight states and theMerritories Such action he said relieved hn of enormous enor-mous embarrassments and fixed the responsibility res-ponsibility for the appointments upon the Senators and Representatives I ho made an exception in one case he must necessarily neces-sarily make exceptions in others and that he said he dared not do COLONEL JACKSON INSISTED however that no gentleman lit Califoriite was so well endorsed for any position as he for that of collector of the port The President in reply said he did not know why the delegation had failed to recommend recom-mend him for the place but added that perhaps per-haps Messrs Morrow and McKenna who were standing near could explain this Both gentlemen were obviously embarrassed embar-rassed by the situation but they made the best explanation possible under the circumstances circum-stances They said that Colonel Jacksons name had been considered with others and that while there was no question as to his ability or his integrity it was thought better bet-ter to recommend Mr Phelps Colonel Jackson at this juncture faced about and in his quick impetuous fashion and shaking his long bony finger at the two Representatives repeated jn a quizzical quizzi-cal half serious tone the words of the old English distich You said my dear friends that you loved me but why did you kick me down stairs I This unexpected sally on the < 3ojonpls part seemed to amuse the President Presi-dent mightily for he laughed heartily and in which Morrow and McKenna catching the infection also joined Colonel Jackson will not accept his office until the beginning begnning of the next fiscal year His appointment will probably be made within a few days |
