Show PRIMED AND COCKEDu u How Mr Rawlins Gets Around an Idaho Jury The curtain has just fallen on the second act of the Idaho political drama The first act was witnessed last fall at and before election time I will be well remembered how the registration officers refused to register members of the Mormon church or men who had ever belonged to the ehurchor had second cousins in that organization or-ganization or who might possibly cither in this life or on the other sidiof the Jordan become members of said organization how many citizens of Idaho who withdrew from the church that they might enjoy their rights were CHAIIOED WITH PEIWUKY and arrested and how others were accused of wholesale conspiracy The result was the reduction of the Democratic vote to such an extent that the Republicans gained a victory in whose questionable glory they are still reveling At the term of court at Malad which adjourned ad-journed last Friday a number of cases arising aris-ing from the election came up and afforded grounds for some lively skirmishing on either side Mr J L Rawlins of this city was engaged by the defense as chief counsel coun-sel On arriving at Mated Mr Rawlins found that indicments charging perjury had been brought in eighteen cases and that there were some fifty or sixty bilL CHARGING CONSPlrACT The prosecution were all prepared to bring in verdicts of guilty as fast as the wheels of justice could be made to grind In order that there should be no hanging fire on tho part of tho jury a panel of picked men and true were selected So much cnfdenc had the friends of the prosecution pro-secution in the abilities of tho jury they were willing t wager that it could convict anything brought before it at sight With this state of things staring them in the face the defence adopted TACTICS OF DELAY First they took advantage of the statutory time allowed before they could be forced to trial this consumed three days Then they entered a demurrer this had t be argued and it took a day to argue it and so with other dilatory motions and their arguments a week was wasted Tho term was only two weeks long and over half of that time had been spent by tho defense in STAVING OFF THS TRIAL There were but a few days left and seeing see-ing that it would take a week t try one of the cases the court finally consented to a continuance untiltho next term Which i in September next As all the men in tho district who aro most t be feared a jurors wero on the panel for this term they cannot sit as jurors I next term and so tho defense feel that they have scored quit vctry and have compar atirely little fear from tho trial in September Septem-ber The men indicted for perjury had all I withdrawn from the Mormon church before they took the voters oath and it will therefore be next to impossible to make I cases against them I r4 S I U |
