| Show THE DETROIT WONDER Record of John Owen Jr the Present Amateur Champion Sprinter of America Here I a good picture of John Owen Jr of Detroit Mich h i now amateur champion cham-pion sprinter of th United States at 10 and and 2 yards When the national mouths was held at Detroit in the fall of ISaS Toby s ho i generally called was unknown t amateur circles He was a member of the Detroit Athletic club at the time but was taking no active interest in it Bo little thought that when the next championship meeting occurred h would breast the tape in front of such men as Westing and Copeland Owen won his first race at Detroit lost January Janu-ary It was a 45 yards novice race in which a number started and ho won as he pleased Noting however was thought of his power as a runner until h ran fecond to Luther Carey who won in 1 seconds at the Detroit Athletic grounds in June The fact that they had a sprinter of high order suddenly dawned on the directors of the club He was put into active train lag and cent t Pitteburgwheroho captured the 10 nnd 230 yard contests A con-tests from several 7t 6 eastern athletes ath-letes At th D A C annual field day sports on Aug 3 a he ran 10 yards olt e aided by a still i breeze in 9 45 sods I s-ods the fastest 5 time r record I Tho time however JOHN OWEN n was not credited by th majority of athletes over limo country and Toby still remained an unimportant western runner in the eyes o eastern athletes ath-letes They were soon forced t acknowledge acknowl-edge his prowess Every one knows how h captured the 10 and 220 yards events at the second annual championship games of the I Amateur Athletic union His time Amtu Atleic uni H was 10 35 for the 10 yards dash and 2 3 forte for-te 220 good time when one considers th poor condition of the track at the tiuA Having defeated Westing his title cf champion cham-pion sprinter of the United States was established estab-lished He next competed at the Canadian championship meeting Sept 2 b All interest in-terest was centered in the race between Owen ansi Westing a champion When therefore Owen in his trial heat fell i a heap at the COyard marl cutting himself up badly tho enthusiasm of every one dropped correspondingly correspond-ingly Owen toed the scratch in the final heat but was unfitted by his accident got away badly a finished third Copeland taking first honors Westing second In the 220yard event he was completely pocketed by L and Cochran and obliged t ran around them even then making a good second sec-ond to Cochran who finished in 2 45 seconds sec-onds under the circumstances ond th circmtnes a very clever performance With proper training nnd care Owen should lower th record in the 10 yards dash before a next championship meeting |
