Show AMUSEMENTS THE TWO IirST OF TWO EXTItKMKS Both houses of amusement were open against each other last evening for the first time in several seasons No one pretends that Salt Lake is equal to the task of furnishing two separate theatrical audiences audi-ences so it was inevitable that the business at one or both places should suffer noither house was large but the theatre got rather the lions share of the patronage The eiittrLintnent at the opera house however calls ior the greater share of at toution Miss Ellsler maUi a great mistake that she did not begin her engagement in Judge Not instead of with Egypt In the former she has u role that fits her almost al-most as Hazel Kirke fits her and with I high class play of the most caarming interests inter-ests She sprang at once back into her old place 5u the affections of her audience and the applause last evening was as vociferous and hearty as she could have wished to hear In Judge Not Frank Harvey has taken a high leap away from the grade he long kept to in his Wages of Sin and The World Against Her and in his new play he has produced s high motive society so-ciety comedydrama such as the old Union Square and Fifth Avenue companies once used to present with so exquisite a finish All the parts are capital and following close upon the role of Miss Ellsler herself is that of Mr Weston who as the journalist jour-nalist and mutual friend made a most pronounced pro-nounced hit and more than ever displayed his versatility The support was all good and the costuming particularly of Miss Ellsler of the last degree of elegance and taste The ladys engagement closes with a matinee and evening performance today AT TIn Harry Kernell showed that he has one of the best allaround variety companies whichever which-ever visited Salt Lake There are two or three features which would not be missed i omitted but all the others are new and original and together they kept the whole house in a roar of applause Kernel himself him-self is an immense humorist and no keener conception of the different shades of metropolitan metro-politan character could well be afforded than that which he gave in his imitations his Lottio Wilson act was specially immense im-mense A great novelty are the lady and gentleman ventriloquists who gave some exhibitions of voice throwing and character personation which are amazing One of th j best acts was that of the all round gymnasts gym-nasts the Braatz Brothers whose strength and agility and whose playing of the cot certina while going through feats requiring almost superhuman strength and balancing power were of the finest and were heavily applauded The whole show spun out to a great length by reason of the numerous encores en-cores and there is no doubt that it will draw well again tonight when it goes for the last time |
