Show A WARNING LESSON I I The Idaho state convention has done that which should be taken as a lesson by the Peoples party m this territory The Idaho convention is made up almost exclusively exclu-sively of men who if they were in Utah would be Liberals Some of them were citizens of this territory where they were active Liberals and the great majority get their inspiration and political direction from the Liberal headquarters in Salt Lake Whenever they are in doubt as to what they should do they send hero for Instructions and on occasions invite Utah Liberals to visit them at their homes and teach them Liberal politics The newspaper news-paper organ of the Liberal party in Utah is nono tho less the organ of the Idaho Liberals speakingbyauthority aud expecting expect-ing to bo obeyed as implicity in our northern neighbor as by its following in Utah The conclave now in session in Boise is neither more nor less than a Liberal convention con-vention and taking its inspiration and instructions in-structions from Salt Lake has placed in the constitution which it is framing a clause absolutely and unceremoniously disfranchising disfran-chising fully onethird of the citizens of the territory for no other than the confessed and expressed reason that these people are believers of a different religion than that professed by Liberals The clause referred to denies Mormons the right to vote to hold office and to sit on juries The disfranchisement ranchisement does not run merely against those who are accused or convicted of crime or charged with wrong doing or im morality but against nil members of the Mormon church As we have recently seen in the opinion of tho Liberal judges of Idaho there is no way for a man who has once been a Morman to acquire citizenship citizen-ship in that territory an open withdrawal from the church being held to be fraudulent lent on the part of the individual The convention has not assumed to deny to Mormons tho privilege of air and water though the statesmen have not yet ended their labors It is not apprehended that any inhibition on the payment of taxes by Mormons will be attempted What the Idaho Liberals have done the Utah Liberals would do if they were in the majority and had tho power The Idaho Liberals have acted strictly In obedience to instructions sent from Salt Lake This lesson should be heeded by every member of the Peoples party in Utah It should inspire the Peoples voters to labor diligently for the retention of the political supremacy which they now enjoy for with the loss of that supremacy would come dis franchisementand the deprivation of every political right Every wise Peoples party man will bear the Idaho threat in mind from this time forth and will see to it that the Liberals do not perpetrate the infamous infam-ous deed here that they have committed at Boise |
