Show UNION DEPOT Several times THE HERALD has urged upon the railroads the propriety of erecting a union depot Three railways tare running passenger trains into town and in a little while trains will be running run-ning regularly on a fourth line In all probability before the close of the coming com-ing J year there will be a direct line to Park City and Coalville and the promise prom-ise is flattering for the early announcement announce-ment of work on the Salt Lake Los Angeles Sir railroads entering Salt Lake and all bringing in and sending ont trains from as many depots I Not only this but it is only a matter of a year or two when the Central Pacific trains will come to this city This will ba the case as soon as the gauge of the D R G Western shall be widened which will not be later than 1890 Already there is great confusion on account of the three depots and the annoyance and confusion are increasing as the travel increases Furthermore neither company com-pany is financially able even if it were willing to erect a depot such as the city demands and the traveling public requires The passenger depots and their surrounding are anything but creditable to the town They do not tend to inspire in the stranger a ery favorable idea of Salt Lake On the contrary they convey the impression that the place which does not afford better and more attractive depot accommodations accom-modations can bo nothing more thaa a country village What THE HERALD proposes is that the City Corporation will present to the jrailway compaaiea sow here and those which shall come or to a depot company I com-pany made up of railroad men the Old I Fort Block upon such termsfcnd conditions con-ditions as will be equitable and satisfactory satis-factory to the railways and the people that the conditions shall include the erection of a union passenger pas-senger depot of certain dimensions dimen-sions that a specified sum shall be expended every year in the improvement im-provement of the grounds and requiring re-quiring that all passenger trains on all roads entering the city shall depart from and run to the Union depot The square contains ten acres and it is admirablY ad-mirablY situated for and adapted to the purpose suggested It might be said to be on the line of all the roads being not more than two or three block from the most distant it is convenient to and within easy reach of the business busi-ness centre and lies in a pleasant quSrter of the city The grounds can with comparatively trifling expense be made attractive and will therefore serve the purpose for which the block has been s > o long held by the corporation corpora-tion namely that of a public park or pleasure ground THE HERALD is confident the people will heartily approve the gift and there is no good reason to doubt the willingness willing-ness of the railroad companies to accept ac-cept the square on the terms suggested As for the roads not yet here they will ba only too glad to acquire depot accommodations ac-commodations in the neart of the city by t this equitable arrangement Let Salt Like have a passenger depot which will be a credit to the city and an advertisement for the place Let ud not give the coming boom a black eye with every stranger who comes here by dumping him odt of tho cars in the hot Bun or in a rain storm to get his first impression of Salt Lake from gazingat au array of freight cars coal sheds ore houses and mud holes |
