Show August Events Ninety-six years ago, in the night, the greatest earthquake ever known in eastern American Amer-ican shook the earth's surface from Toronto, Canda, to Jacksonville, Jack-sonville, Florida. THE WORST damage was at Charleston, S.C., where three-fourths of the city's buildings were flattened. Many died and the damage was in the millions dollars. This shock was felt as far west as Iowa and all over New England in the east. Contrary to what some believe, earthquakes earth-quakes have occurred in the eastern part of the U.S. often- though not as often as in California. Cali-fornia. They have usually been mild. IF AN earthquake of the strength of that in 1886 should occur in the east today, the damage would be much greater than a century ago. It's wise to keep in mind that it could and probably will happen. |
