Dave Wlgham Clipper Sports BOUNTIFUL Plumbers Supply came back strong to knock off a good Olympic Club team twice on Saturday night to win top honors in the annual Bountiful City Softball Tournament. Tourna-ment. THE TOP four teams, from the seven leagues sponsored by the city, made up the 28 team field for the double elimination affair. Thursday night was the top winner with all four teams placing in the top four in the tournament. Besides the first place effort of Plumbers and the second place showing by the Olympic Club, the Thursday night league also claimed third with Barton Shoes and fourth with J.C. Bangerter. A fifth place tie was between Ras-mussen Ras-mussen and Cottonwood Lanes. Going into the semifinals all four Thursday night teams were undefeated. Then Plumbers knocked off Bangerter 17-9 in a rain shortened game while Olympic Club downed Barton Shoes in extra innings. That set up the big battle of unbeatens between Plumbers and the Olympic Club. THIS WAS a classic battle with each team putting runs on the scoreboard. Finally the issue was decided when Guy Morrell stroked a two run home run, his third of the game to give Olympic a thrilling 17-16 victory. In the next battle, Barton Shoes eliminated Bangerter by a score of 8-3 to send them up against Plumbers. The title hopes of Barton Shoes were then ended as the Plumbers started hitting the ball and playing solid defense to earn a 9-1 victory. i -J TgpS M&bs," 'iff' "f A j. - "r ' 'i I : . : ,,..,-,.-- ' t ' ' ,7,v- ' ' 77' '- " . 7 y : - , " " - and then gets knocked down for the final squash. THAT MEANT only Olympic Club and Plumbers remained in the tournament with Plumbers having the task of having to win two games in a row. In the city's July 24 tournament, tourna-ment, the Plumbers team was in the driver's seat but they lost two games and had to settle for second place. This time they weren't about to settle for runner-up. Both sides were able to generate a few runs in the early going, but then the Plumbers team went on a scoring rampage. Before it was over Ken Minear, John Cook, Gil Hodges, Curt Wimmer, Blaine Harding and Kent Wardle had stroked home runs to take a 18-7 decision and sent the tournament into yet another championship cham-pionship game. THIS TIME the Plumbers team took control from the outset and wouln up with a convincing win despite having to play with two of their '. main players out of action. One had family '. committments while catcher Kent Wardle had to go to the hospital for stitches in the fourth inning of the first game when he collided with ' his own first baseman while trying to catch a fly ' ball. No MVP award was given in this tourna- : ment, which was probably a good thing, be- ' cause, it would have been tough to pick one from the Plumbers team. This tournament 1 championship was definitely a team effort. If a MVP trophy were available many would have voted for Brad Christensen and the rest of the .: city grounds crew who did a super job of getting get-ting the field ready to play following a huge ; rainstorm. |
