Show GETTING WISDOM There is a bill before the Dominion parlia neiit which has for its objeeUhe prevention of the enlargement of the Canadian population popula-tion by the retention of American thieves defaulters and bank wreckers The Canadian Cana-dian statesmen have been a long time in making up their minds to hedge these fellows fel-lows out evidently regarding enterprising Americans with money as desirable citizens even though the money was stolen and its holders were the thieves It is also observed that the Montreal board of trade has unanimously = unani-mously adopted a resolution approving the hill which provides for the extradition of the rascals who commit crimes here and skip across the border to escape punishment and enjoy their illgotten wealth The newspapers newspa-pers and the churches may also applaud the measure and in the course of time the Canadian Can-adian community may conclude that it is not morally healthy to harbor and respect crim inals Society will assuredly suffer from tUe contact and rottenness and dishonesty dishon-esty will permeate and affiict society A community cannot make itself a harbor of refuge for thiovo without losing respect for honestj and it cannot protect defaulters without placing a discount on integrity Canada has had many millions of money which was stolen from America but the good that the cash has done for the dominion has been more than counteracted b y the presence of the men who stole the cash Statesmanship should long ago have suggested to the Canadians the wisdom of closing their doors against the scoundrels who flee across the line to escape punishment punish-ment for their evil deeds It does not eliminate eli-minate the scoundrelism from a man to cross Niagara bridge and the people of the Dominion should be as eager to protect themselves from the association of the scoundrels as Americans can be to punish their thieves and embezzlers |
