Pratt made a descent upon Bountiful Boun-tiful yesterday morning and arrested Byron W King of that place ashe was working in his blacksmith shop He made an attempt to escape and started for the cover of a taU corn patch about fifty yards distant bat when Deputy Cannon called on him to halt and a pistol barrel or two were displayed dis-played he gave himself up and was escorted to town with several of his family who had been subpoenaed as witnesses After sitting down to a dinner at Eastons with the companionable companion-able Mr Bush Mr King was taken before be-fore Commissioner Norrell where a pile of documents formidable enough to daunt the defendant blacksmith though he was confronted him Marshal Mar-shal Dyer whispered to a reporter that he thought it was a dead sure case of polygamy anyway The complaint however only alleged unlawful unlaw-ful cohabitation and named two sisters Anna and Bertha Tanner as his wives Mr Legrand Young appeared for Mr King and said they would waive examination Mr Zane however dec de-c d > d to examine the witnesses and the name of BBBTHA STEVENS was called The owner of it a slight young girl was sworn She was evidently evi-dently very nervous and testified with much hesitation Asked what her name was she said Bertha Tanner She had been living at East Bountiful since last July Before that at South Jordan moved there last year from Salt Lake City Had a sister named Anna did not know whether she wash was-h re or not She lived at East Bountifulhow long she had lived there witness could not say Had visited Anna occasionally since July Didnt Young said they admitted that they were defendants defend-ants wi e and child but MrZane said I he wished to put some questions a Witness said she married Mr King I twelve years ago f Bertha lived withher two years ago for about a year she confirmed Berthas story of having two children but said the eldest was 5 or 6 years old she said she believed she was Mr Kings first wife Mr Zane said he hadnt thought she was and on pressing her she said Mr King had had another wife before her who now lived in Bountiful She had never been to her house Mr King never goes therehadnt lived with her at all which she said gave her a right to say she herself was the first wife JOHN HALQ0IST a blacksmith said Mr King had formerly for-merly been his partner in this city He left here two years ago He had heard Mr King say something about marrying marry-ing Bertha while he was his partner but where or when he married her he did not know He thought that King had acknowledged Bertha to him in 1SS4 This concluded the case and as he was quite a poor man Mr Kings bonds were fixed at 1000 THE MAE8HAI6 SUSPICIONS Only a oohab was disgusted remark re-mark of a deputy who had thought the case promised something better To a teporter who asked the Marshal how about his dead sure case of polygamy he said that he believed himself that it was nothing else than a case of polygamy polyg-amy as for Berthas 4yearold child he was of the opinion that it belonged to Anna who had kindly loaned it to Bertha to enable her to elude the polygamy charge This rather stunned the reporter but Deputy Cannon confidently con-fidently said they had a good many witnesses who had not yet been heard from and the graver charge might be made out yet |
