Show i I S Queens Evidence I Oil Wedn sdl1 evening in the Second Sec-ond Ward meeting house the local dramatic dra-matic corps successfully presented he drama Queens Evidence to s large and attentive audience It is but two or three weeks go that this popular organization produced The Ticket cf Leave Man and notwithstanding that tho cast Wednesdays performance was almost en entire duplication of the previous play the rendition of Queens Evidence evinced much painstaking I I effort and evident study and application applica-tion The plot ia precisely the same as most sensational love dramas ttie i cnarncter consisting of a villain a hero and heroinatwith therelie of comedy mix d in and It IS only as the details are shown that the regular playgoer finds interest Each one who took apart a-part asan amateur acquitted himself ortherself very well As Gilbert Medand Mr Shorten although certainly cer-tainly not altogether weak was hardly heavy enough if our unbiased judgment judg-ment is worth anything for the depth of feeling which the character demands Mr W H WhItes conception of the unmitigated villain Mathew Thoruton I was very fine and frequently called forth involuntary uncomplimentary exclamations ex-clamations A better articulation would place Mr White in the front rani of the local dramatic spLere Mr yt Purdy the real hero t > f the evening even-ing if not of the piece showed some very clever impersonations of the Jew Isaacs and his frequent reference to his lhi being Jike ha beagle did not fail to tickle the youngsters present immensely Mr Herrick as the sedat aiill juSt county magisterial magnate appeared to better advantage than even before and we think this style of character char-acter suits him better than the low comedy which he has hithertoassumed Albert fccuwcroft as Joe was ull that could be desired while Mr Carrs reu I diion of Sir r t Sidney was dignified and appropriate The ladies did also uniforu ly firstrate Miss Ensign as Kate Medland being ino t excellent in her idea of the blind lady The talented little girl Miss Jose Zitzman fee ivpii many plaudits which she certainly cer-tainly deserved reruaps the most pleasant part of the evenings entertainment however had vet to cQme At the close of the last act and just as the curtain or iinanly dec nds upon the tableau Mr H George Richme fcdlowed by the players play-ers stepj ed upou the stage and made tho following speechf = Ladies aid gentlemen If you will tihidly re uiulu i our seats a tew nicMftuts we I shall feel ootigEd 1 have a little duty now to perform which I am sure you will be as pleaed to witness as 1 um to discharge In behalf of our association associa-tion i nave the honor and I can as dirt you the sincere pleasure of presenting pre-senting to Mr William Purdy the president of the organization this wat band chain and to ask him to accept ac-cept them as a token < f the respect and e leffiHiu i which he is held by ins ftl lowIaborers on the amateur stage His euHrgt and perseverance in the furnishing furnish-ing of healthy amusement are appreciated appre-ciated by all of us and we hope that we may long continue to retain his valuable help end wise counsel After duly presenting the gift to Mr Pgrdy Mr Richinf thanked those preseut for their appreciation in the post and solicited lor hi future their nearly support Mr William Purdy followed with a reply which exhibited much inward emotion HP said that if he had had any idea of the affair wouldjhave prepared a neat speech in which he could have adequately expressed to them his thanks for the pleasant sur rzise withwhich they had greeted him He conscientiously cmde vored to do Uijj best for the issociation but that affgir was the greatest surprise ne hud ever xperienced H thanked them for their generosity and could add no more except trial he had ha hi lik Jaa heagle F It The wafch is encised in < 4ounce silver aud is the U > W Raymond movement On the inside of the cas the engraved inscription is as follows 5 Presented JPresident W Puzdy January 25th i S3 by the Second Ward Dramatic Adsociction sPhe plnv was repeatp last evening to a full house r J t 1 |
